Yes they want to inspect guns but only the semi autos. LAX inspects everything IIRC. I rarely if ever go to OC Sheriffs range so I'm not defending the practice. I believe it was instated when one of the people there died after dropping a MAC 10 the sheriffs had confiscated and they were looking at. Also I believe an officer there long ago had an AD that resulted in someone being shot in the leg.

With the new sheriff in power, I'd not think this range will stay open to the "civilians" for long anyways, up until 2001 or so the range store sold handguns to the public!

No long guns of any sort either, no magnums or 10mm, the 5rd rule is rarely if ever enforced especially for rimfires. For $7 I can put up with that range once in a great while but I'd never buy a membership, too restrictive. Evans has been ok for me but my dad and many other calgunners avoid that place like the plague.

In posted long ago about some of my experiences at OC sheriff range, some negative. Hows the service at the Brea range? I've heard the service is ok but they charge by the hour,no thanks.

Sounds to me like the cops are the last people I want handling any weapons there!

Can anyone in Fresno comment on 'The Range' indoor range? Went there on Monday, friendly staff but they listed all the J-frames I was looking at at full retail.

My first visit there was actually kind of fun. My brother had a family membership so we went shooting there when I visited him. I don't know about their pricing but the range was fairly relaxed with rules.

I don't advocate "stretching the envelope" - especially if one is not accustomed to multiple-string shots - but the "one round per second" rule was not really enforced. My only problem was they wouldn't let me pick up my OWN brass to keep and reload. I was a visitor so I didn't protest much.

The people behind the counter were okay; I was probably just a new face.

I was Google searching for the number for SharpShooters Shooting Range in Torrance and this is what came up:

I frequent that place a good amount, the I mostly deal with the Asian guy - he never gave me any issues at all. No one else ever talked to me.

                In reference to: Modesto

Actually, the ONLY range on HWY 132 (which is synonymous with Yosemite Blvd) is Roning Arms, formerly known as Barnwood Arms and prior to that it was known as "Gun Country. Prior to becoming Roning, it was owned by the GREAT folks that own Barnwood in Ripon. Back in the good ol' days when it was called "Gun Country, Gary Boucher was the owner. In 1986, Gary literally had a shootout with some gangbangers from Stockton. That shootout left one of em dead and two others in critical shape. Funnier than hell because the twits went in determined to steal guns and expected little to NO resistence. HAd a .25 semi Saturday special as "Feinstein" would deem it and figured it enough to own the place. Little did they know that all employees, including Gary carried. I guess some sprayin' and prayin' on the part of the gangsta's went on while some very nicely placed shots rang out from the defensive side. The rest is history. It gets worse though. To my knowledge, every owner has had to deal with at least one suicide. No less then three people have gone into that range (again, every owner has had the pleasure of cleaning up someone's mess) with one thing in mind, or should I say momentarily in mind as they walked in, casually rented a handgun and ammo as though nothing was amiss, then proceeded to load the piece and scatter their cranium all over the range. Fortunately, no one else has ever been injured, albeit some very emotionally upset folks.

The current owner is not the same caliber as Gary Boucher, or the nice folks from Ripon. If you are in the area of Modesto, it is best to drive the extra ten to twelve miles north to get yourself to Barnwood Arms. They are courteous, they have a great inventory, a nice range and will match most within reason.

So True!! Yesterday I picked up a gun that was supposed to be finished with repair 10 months ago and it cost me $125 instead of the promised $40! All of their prices are 10% higher than what you can find elsewhere, they horrible customer service, and they have egos the size of this state. It is amazing they are still in business.

Diablo Valley Gun Works, what colossal jerks all around.

I take all my business to The Old West Gun Room, though he got a bad review earlier in this thread listen to the other 3 guys who say hes good. Really knowledgeable and will answer your questions. A bit gruff but he is a nice guy.

bain and davis have good staff, on site gunsmith and frequently have decent prices on used guns; don't know about the new ones cause i never look at them. i have always been treated as if my business mattered at this shop. recently i was treated very well at turner's in norwalk. josh [employee] and rich [manager] were friendly and professional in their treatment of me. i wound up purchasing a pristine w german sig p226 9mm....

Dave's Magnum Range in San Berdoo. Ok range. Has some handguns for sale. Bad attitude; don't ask about any gun he doesn't have in stock. In his opinion: If he doesn't sell the gun, it sucks. If he doesn't have the ammo, it's unreliable ammo. Comes across as a know-it-all, but doesn't actually seem to know anything. Purports his opinions as hard facts.

I've had good experiences with the Turner's in San Berdoo; I hear a lot of sales BS (Obama this and Obama that) but thats fine as long as the facts about firearms are accurate. For the most part I will hear the facts about a firearm that are correct, they will tell me their opinion about it, and actually tell me that it's their opinion. I've bought two handguns their and satisfied with their service.

The service I tend to get is different than the norm. I don't look like a "proto-typical" Pro-2A junkie stereotype (I'm usually in slacks and button-down shirt) although I fight very hard for my rights and am pissed at the CA gun laws (Former Army Reservist & Lifetime NRA all the way)

For me it's the other customers: Anecdote: Had a middle aged man in battered tank-top and faded BDU pants with a large beer belly tell everyone in the store that the government developed the swine flu virus in Fort Detrick during the time that he was rotating through there as part of returning SF veterens from Angola and he met some of the doctors there who told him that the Army was going to release it to create a mass hysteria and make the president call martial law and take away everyones guns... (I'm not smart enought to make this up) It was hard to keep from laughing...
