My 1911 has the longer guide rod which make for removing the plug a pain. I have seen and handled other 1911's with the shorter guide rod with the closed end plug which is more of a push button, turn barrel bushing easier. My question is are all 1911's easily converted to use the shorter guide rod and plug? Does the recoil spring need replacing? I have the Colt 1911 Government. Why would they have such a design making it more difficult? Others have said they hate that type as well.

About the only time you can't change out to a standard guide rod plug and cap is if you have a bull barrel of some type that doesnt use a standard bushing. The recoil spring is the same."You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

although I suppose there are a few tanks which I owe an apology to for that remark" -
I like the full-length guide rod. I don't understand why people think it makes it so much harder to break down the platform, it really doesn't.
As to the why's of a FLGR: 1.) Less recoil spring bind 2.) Less stress on the guide rails.
Yes, they're minimal issues, but those are the advantages to the FLGR. I don't see any disadvantages, personally. Please read the Calguns Wiki
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.
