Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

+1 on the training. I'm working on that one.Originally posted by LuieburgerCurrently I have a pistol grip Mossberg 500 and I keep it in basically condition 3. Full tube, snap cap in the chamber, hammer down (trigger pulled on the snap cap). That way I can just pick it up and rack it without having to worry about the release lever. I could probably keep a round in the chamber and the safety on, but I don't feel like I need to. If you are going to keep a round in the chamber, I recommend practicing with a snap cap. Train your muscle memory to go straight to the safety first. My muscle memory goes right to the slide rack.
Soon I will have my Sig P226, and I'll keep it in condition 2. One round chambered and a full mag with the hammer down.
+10000 internets for the P226. I've got 8 days left till I can pick up mine.

An unloaded firearm is worthless for HD, but that being said I think anyone that has kids or other people in the home need to carefully weigh their options and security of that weapon.
I do think training and the speed with which you can effectively get to your HD weapon has a lot to do with it. There is no substitute for muscle memory.
In reality if you ever have to go to your HD weapon, it will be dark, you could be sleeping, and lots of other factors. Practicing the quick retreival and knowing exactly how to proceed is the key. Having practiced exactly what you will do and how will have an enormous impact on your performance.
I know this is a little beyond the scope of the thread, but for me I keep my weapon, flashlight, pants and shoes at the side of my bed. I don't want to engage a threat naked, lol! Also know your home, apt or place you live. Be able to move in the dark without bumping into walls or falling over.People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

In the Pipe
What advice do you guys have about safe storage of HD weapons? I'm specifically wondering about hammer up/down and chamber loaded/empty.
My primary is a Sig P226, chamber loaded but hammer down. What I'm not sure about is shotguns and carbines. Is it safe to keep a shotgun or carbine with one in the pipe and the weapon on "Safe", or should you keep the chamber empty?
Do not keep a round in the chamber on an AR/carbine. The time required to pull the charging handle negligible. It's different if it's your carry weapon and you need it fast. IMHOComment
