Why blur/hide serial numbers?

I've seen this regularly on here, as well as other sites with pictures posted. Is it just the idea of people finding your personal info using it? Is that even possible? Or am I just missing something obvious...

Some of us believe the less info online about us the better. Sure people will know what some of the guns I own (or may not anymore) based on searching through my 6400+ posts but they won't have serial numbers.

I'm not so concerned about govt intrusion, in the end they have the power and they know far more about us than even the most paranoid CGN member realizes.

If you don't care post your SN, if you do then don't. Free country and all that. For now...

i never blur out any of my serial numbers. figured, why bother.

I do it because if I don't, someone posts that I need to delete the picture and photoshop the serial number. Then the thread turns into an argument about whether to photoshop your serial numbers.

I used the serial numbers from your firearms to find your address, phone number, alarm code, ATM number and what kind of dog you have so, no nothing major.

Well, if your gun is stolen and you wanna keep it, blurring the serial number prevents detection.

I see it like you would post a image of your SS # or Drivers Lins #. You have a right to protect your self and your identify .

This is the reason I do it. It may seem a bit paranoid, but if this were to happen, it would be a pain in the ...

Ultimately, I can prove I own what I own, but it would just be a major ordeal sorting it all out. I prefer as few hang-ups in life as possible.

While this is true, it doesn't mean they untraceable. The ATF does traces on long guns all the time. Just follow the paper trail.

Police find a rifle used in a crime,
they contact ATF for a trace,
ATF contacts manufacturer and they give up the distributer that bought it,
the dist. gives up the dealer,
the dealer gives up the purchaser,
the purchaser gives up the one he PPT'd it to,
an so on...

There is traceability in California, but you are right... they are not "registered". If it is another state? "I sold it to some guy at a gunshow years ago. I don't remember who." case closed.

I only blur the serial numbers of my handguns. I don't really care about the rifles.

Never did. If they want to go to the hassle and replicate the numbers and use it in a crime then I guess I'll have to sort it out then
