Please point me in the right direction

I am in possession of a handgun that used to belong to my friend. While in the military, he told me, "If you can fix it, you can keep it." So I fixed it, and he let me keep it. He has since moved back to AZ and is mia. He has mental issues. This was back in 2007 and I've had this gun in my safe ever since. Now here is my question. How do I legally get this gun in my name? Is it even possible for this to happen? Any advice would be much appreciated.

PS. I did a search for this topic and came up blank. I'm apologize in advance if this topic has already been covered.
