training wife/kids to shoot

im recently married, and I myself have grown up with firearms, however my wife, before me, has never handled any firearm. i bought a ruger 10/22 as a entry level gun for her. ive come up with a few bumps in teaching her how to use a firearm. the safety part is a no brainer, but sight picture and so on eludes me on how to pass it on.
does anybody know of a good website that shows how to line up the iron sights? i learned far too long ago to remember exact words to get the proper sight picture, and in trying to explain the process we had a basic failur to communicate, so pictures would help.

Have her hold a v-sign with the back hand, put one finger up with the front hand. That's how I taught my kids.

I created these pics when I was teaching BB gun shooting to the Cub Sprouts.





Go through this step by step, and explain it like this:

1. the circle represents the front sight.

2. the notched rectangle represents the rear sight.

3. you need to "see" the front sight fully inside the notch on the rear sight.

4. while doing #3, whatever you see behind the sights is where your shot will go.

I don't know why I did this as a 6:00 hold, since we were using rifles.

Try this and see how it works. You can also explain that the shooter needs to have:

• his/her shooting eye
• the rear sight
• the front sight
• the target

all on the same line.

I did the same as "mzimmers" but I used a different sight picture, cut the sights out of consrtuction paper & glued them to popcycle sticks. Let the kids practice lining them up.

Yeah but it's only useful if you shoot with both eyes open.

An Appleseed sounds perfect for them. They all can do it for free and they go over all the basics such as shooting positions and sight picture. And a 10/22 is perfect for it.
