Is my S&W AR going to blow?

Just got back from Angeles crest, where I shot maybe 120 rounds of Israel Military 5.56. Beautiful day up there etc. Decided to walk into the "gun shop" where I met the owner of Shooters Edge. We got to talking a bit, when he told me, "you know despite the fact that your Smith is stamped 5.56 on the barrel, it could blow due to the extreme pressure of the 5.56 rounds He further explained, that despite the testing done at the factory, the thicker case, more powder military rounds routinely reach the extreme end of the testing limits. For $100 dollars, he will reshape the barrel a bit (free bore) which will allow these rounds to be fired without potential problems. Hum... while I knew that there was a difference between these rounds, I did not realize that something like this could happen. So, should I pay the hundred bucks, shoot .223 only, get a 1800 dollar Colt upper (which he says are the best) or roll the dice? Or, is this not correct, as it sounds to me like lots of potential lawsuits which no company wants.

I'm not an expert, but I say he is completely full of it. 556 uppers are made for 556 and can shoot 223. Now, if you were shooting 556 in a .223 upper, he might be correct. And, you can get a really nice Colt upper for 1000 or less!

Like he says, not everybody needs top spec stuff, so figure out what it is you need and decide accordingly. The barrel will probably be just fine.

Military 556 brass is not necessarily thicker than commercial 223 brass.

Kind of thought so. I have been shooting 5.56 out of a Mini 14 for almost 10 years with no issues. I suppose anything is possible, but S&W has been around long enough to not allow their products to fail in this manner.

The guy sounds like a douchebag that just wanted to make a quick buck off someone who was less knowledgeable about this subject.

You're rifle is marked 5.56, it will shoot 5.56 just fine. If it was .223 then no you shouldnt shoot 5.56. Why would a company want to put themselves in that position with a potential lawsuit waiting to happen?

If you're rifle worked fine then continue shooting it and don't worry. If you actually have any real problems then come back and ask questions or search.
