My gun safe just became an un-safe (combo lock stuck)

I have an AMSEC 5517W gun safe. It has served me well for about two years. This morning I took a gun out for cleaning. Came back 20 minutes later and the combination lock is now stuck! It is stuck on the last number I turned to open the safe. It will turn about 1/8" either way around the last number, but that's it. I can still turn the handle and move the bolts back and forth, but the lock itself is jammed.

Anyone else have this happen? I haven't checked, but with my luck the safe is now out of warranty.

    Help!

If it's not under warranty there should be a access panel on the inside of the door open it and take a look it might be something simple or call a locksmith (ouch).

+1, take off the interior panel and try to move everything around. You should be able to see where its binding up, could be as simple as a loose nut somewheres...

Thank the gods it happened while it was open!

You can call a Locksmith, they do safes all the time.

            Ok problem solved.

I began taking it apart, but before I got very far I noticed a piece of rubber sealant that surrounds the door had fallen off. It must have jammed between something that prevented the lock from turning. I threw away the rubber thing and all is well!

There are still rubber seals on three sides of the door and that should be enough to keep it snug. I use a goldenrod in my safe so it's warmer than the rest of the house, this probably led to the adhesive finally letting go.

Perhaps unnecessary, but it might be a good idea to have a safe company come out and do a tune-up on your safe- lube stuff and check things out.

take back panel off and check the back of the lock for anything that is obviously jamming it. while mech locks are simple. it takes one stupid mistake to fudge it up. if it is stuck on your last # i have a feeling the spring might of broke on your fence.

I work on these daily. have any questions PM me. if you can get me a picture of it that would help. if you cant fix it on your own.

lol NM. see you figured it out.

The molding must of kept the relock trigger from releasing. The gasket keep smoke out incase of a fire.

Is it a fire-rated safe? If so, disposing of that moulding piece may have destroyed its fire capability...

+1 on this! I would call a safe company to come go over the safe, check it out and replace that seal.

Could be an extumescent seal, expands with high temp to make a watertight seal.
