    Shooting Competitively

    Hello Cal Guns!

My wife told me the other day that she wants to shoot competitively. Right now she is not much of a shooter but when she does go she is pretty good. She has a springfeild XD9 and I have a glock 21sf. I am wondering if she could be competetitive with her gun or do I need to get her a special competition gun. Also we live in San Diego, does anyone know of a competition around here that she could try and see if she even really enjoys it.

    Thanks
    Jeff

Run what she has. There is no need to dump money into a sport she may or may not like. Plus, skill will always be more important than equipment.

There are quite a few local clubs in San Diego. What type of action shooting does she want to get into? USPSA, IDPA, 3gun?

Encourage her and join the gun games with her. It's a great experience.

Yes, there are several. Iron Sights in Oceanside has Thursday night matches - first and third are fun steel and second and fourth vary. You can see the schedule on line. The fun steel are draw and shoot six steel targets, timed, with penalty for misses. Each time you go up you get three chances, high score thrown out. Usually three rounds.

Lemon Grove Rod and Gun club (outdoor) range in Alpine also has IDPA style and ICORE style matches twice a month on Saturday mornings. The stages are fun and there are all levels of skill. My wife and I are doing more of these lately, since outdoors in the morning is much more fun that indoors, and there's a lot more variety in the targets and stages. Check their website for the schedule as well. There is a shoot (called the Lemon Squeezer) next Saturday (11-20) and we'll be there.

Costs for each are reasonable. If you don't want to draw from a holster, you can start from low-ready.

All these are low stress and a lot of fun - good for beginners as well as more experienced shooters.

USPSA has a Production Division, created just for readily available handguns like XDs and Glocks. No major modifications to the guns are allowed, all magazines are limited to 10 rounds and all shooters are scored minor (no need to shoot a big caliber or hot-rod a smaller caliber).

All she needs is her XD9, at least 3 magazines (ideally 5 or more), a strong-side belt holster that covers the trigger, and magazine pouches to carry the spare magazines.

Use the USPSA Club Finder to find something in your area:

Congrats on both of you being interested in the shooting sports. I posted links in the Ladies Forum and the CRPA Forum, listing whatever competitions match directors want to share. As soon as the 2011 schedule is ready, those upcoming competitions will also be listed.
