BB pistol for practice

Ok so i am honestly wondering if a BBgun or co2 pellet gun would really help me become better at shooting pistols in my backyard. I am a ways away from the range and would like to be able to practice every night if possible, i noticed that i have a slight flinch every once in a while dry firing my sig. and would rather work on it live firing than just dry firing my pistol fifty times a night.

Big 5 even has a replica sig p2022 that is pretty close to my p220 in feel.


So does anyone else out there do this? I think it could actually be a little fun to set up cardboard silhouttes and punch holes in em.

Have you considered Airsoft? I've trained with Jimmy Flores (LAPD and USPSA Grandmaster) who makes a good case for using it.

I used to airsoft quite often, and now i paintball. But that is a great idea! maybe a gas blowback, I just wonder about training with a bbgun or airsoft gun and wether it will help flinch and also getting better groupings. my thoughts are as long as i am trying to be consistent and get good grouping its gonna carry over into real guns. Im all excited now!

Before I became a full fledged gun owner, I shot pellet pistols and rifles in my backyard when I was in 6-12 grade.
I think now, if you want to practice aiming and firing stance while shooting pellet/bb guns in the backyard, it is good training.
I wouldn't mind practicing rifle shooting stances while handling a Gamo air rifle. It's almost like a .22 rifle.

I agree Cali-shooter, I know firing my benjamin sheridan 20 cal has made me leaps and bounds better with my ar15, I think the most important thing will be finding a decent trigger on a pistol and something close to the feel of my carry gun. I worry about training more with the airsoft or c02 pistol and learning that trigger better than my other gun ha ha ha.

I guess im going to try it out and see if my groups get better, i feel like having some more time holding my sight picture on target and practicing consistency, also practicing drawing from the holster and coming on target fast will be reflected in the real steel.

And bbs are soo cheap, i think 500 are like 6 bucks, ha ha ha probably about the same for airsoft still.

I forgot to ask in the original post, can anyone comment on the accuracy of pellet or bb pistols? that is another thing i worry about with airsoft is my old gas blowback pistols would have trouble hitting man sized targets at 7 yards they just flew all over the place.

Yep, that's another issue. If you want to practice with a BB pistol to have comparable training with a REAL HD/Duty pistol, you want an airgun that is not some POS that sprays pellets inaccurately and is unreliable to hit targets even though you aim properly.

I remember my Crosman Co2 'Repeater' Pistol (Looked like a S&W 1006)
served me well during the early years of my plinking. But the airgun eventually crapped out on me about 3 years later, and started to spray pellets no matter how well I aimed.
Bottom line, you'll want a quality BB pistol that shoots straight in order to train with it like you would for a real gun. Also a big plus if that bb pistol is designed/handles like a real pistol, or has the look and shape of a real gun. I saw several BB pistols at Big 5 that are based off Beretta's, Walther p99's, etc.

Do research online to which BB pistols hold up well, and which perform well and shoot straight, AND are durable and don't degrade into crap. My Crosman Repeater was a good shooter, but wasn't durable and thus didn't last after a few years of 'service.'

Air guns are great for home practice. I prefer pellet guns - they are generally more accurate than BB guns. Check out Pyramyd Air for selections, many look and feel like the real firearms they are modeled after. Good pellet guns aren't cheap - generally $200+, but you can train with them at home. I have a cheap Crosman and Gamo currently, but I'm planning on upgrading soon.

I dont mind dropping some cash on the pistol, you all bring up good points of having something accurate, i dont want to guess if my shot was off because of gun or me

My company manufactures a training pistol similar to the P226, which may fit your bill in approximate weight and feature as a P220.

Yeah i am interested, i really want to practice everynight after work and get on target quicker, Is it a green gas type pistol? also what kind of accuracy can i expect, I used to have a kwa or kwj m700 i think, 650fps rocket ship ha ha ha

The city I'm in doesn't allow BB guns. I'm using a gas blow back airsoft (kwa) for practice. Mine is accurate. My buddy got a M9 which is a dead ringer for the real thing. I 3 gun all the time, and using the airsoft is good cheap practice especially for weak hand drills.

I truly learned to shoot by carting my Red Ryder around with me from the age of 8 to about 14. When I joined the military I was considered to be a great shot by my peers, and I'd never actually shot a firearm.

Just watch shooting in your backyard. In many California towns (including mine) there are local ordinances against shooting a BB gun within city limits. Might want to stick to inside the garage.

These are green gas type pistols.

a properly worn in model can expect less than 6 inch groups at 25yds in the right hands with the right ammunition. It doesn't sound like much, but it's pretty good on a model gun. We actually have competition shooters that play with these because of the dead on weight.

The big thing about the model isn't the shooting accuracy (that's a bonus though) it's the weight and function that helps build in muscle memory.
