Sounds like the gun needs more or better oil before going to storage.

My old 870, bought in late 2007, could just about be left out in the rain and not rust. I took it on a range trip, fired several hundred rounds through it, and then left it in the gun case for the better part of two months just to see if it would rust. NOTHING.

I would say to oil it more or wipe it down with a silicone gun cloth before putting it up. Worked on all my firearms to prevent wiping off oil or leaving hand prints to rust.

Try using Eezox or CorrosionX next time.

Go to the Calguns Shotgun forum and search for Eezox.

I personally use Eezox on my 870 Express, and Eezox worked like magic to prevent rusting on it.

        Regards,

Remington's basic finish is horrible for corrosion resistance. My 700 SPS-V is the only gun I own that I've ever seen rust on. My $99 Marlin is more resistant than the 700 lol

I think this is more of a finish problem than a oil problem. No other gun I have is like this, and my grandfathers aren't either. I don't have a problem oiling my guns but if I forget to oil my shotgun for a day or two after a range trip I don't want it to be covered in rust, I don't think its acceptable and want to fix it.

Oiling is just a bandaid for your problem. Sounds like your shotguns finish is worn? Is it blued or parkerized? A new finish will make your gun look brand new again and protect from rust without a full oil bath. Cheaply done and you can do it at home. Good luck, and let us know your results.

I know it's the finish, I got it from Turners and it was like this when it was new. I dont know what the finish is, it's the 870 linked to in my signature. I don't want to redo the finish myself, I rather pay someone who knows what they are doing and does a good job.

Have called remmington? I wonder what they'd say. Maybe a bunch of their stuff got poorly blued, and would they re-blue it free? Dessicants cant hurt. Boshield works well also.

I also think Duracoat or a similar finish is the answer. For whatever reason, I've noticed that *some* shotguns tend to be rust magnets. Maybe it's the Big5 special as you guys say. Either way, I agree that the only way out of it is to get a better finish.

Ok what type of finish would be best? I'm not looking for something that looks nice I want something that will last.
