    Help me understand why

So, if one can own a M4 legally in CA as long as it has a BB and no "flash hider" or bayo lug.

Then why am I being told that I can not legally own a Ruger Mini-14 folder by a local gun store?

My Dad offered to give me his original blued folder, similar to this one but with out the flash hider and bayonet lug.

Am I being told bad information, or is this just another case of stupid CA gun laws?

Your M4 can have a flash hider and a bayonet lug if it has a BB.

The politicians make the laws with out ever suffering any consequenses. Just like those who take oaths and don't uphold them.
California's politicians and unionized government employees are a crime gang that makes the Mexican drug cartels look like a Girl Scout Troop in comparison.

The folding stock makes the over all length of the rifle too short, resulting in a SBR. It's in the flow chart.

Ok, the length I felt may be the kicker here. I kind of thought the Ruger Mini folder was shorter than the M4 carbines.

I looked around for the flow chart, but couldn't find it very quick.
Plus, I just got a bit pissed about this since I can't take up my Dad's offer (he lives out of state) to take over ownership of his folder mini.

          What is "SBR"?

You can pin the stock so it cannot be folded closed. That would be OK.

              SBR = short barreled rifle

The flowcharts are at the top in the menu bar under "AW & OLL Guides".

Thanks! Couldn't remember where it was. Gotta book mark that.

Also, the pistol grip on the folder would require a magazine lock for the rifle.

BTW, Bayonet lug is not a restricted feature in CA.

Just put it in the factory stock and problem solved. No need for bullet button and 100% legal.

Second this This would change everything. If you still want the folder than use the factory stock to transfer , and change it back at your own risk.

You could add a long muzzle brake and BB and be ok with the folder.

                            Thanks for the good replies!

I myself really would like the mini folder, since I already have the full stocked mini 14.

Too many weird stories of good people getting popped for bending the rules out there, so I am telling my Dad to just hold on to the mini folder along with my M1-A SM with it's evil flash suppressor. (I refuse to modify it for a silly CA law, so it will stay with him till I figure out what to do with it).

Again, thanks for the sincere replies to my question.

Sounds like your new to the state, actually just a few short years ago we had people going through considerable heartache and expense for having firearms that were actually legally configured. The ambiguity and complexity of the law even confused LEO's and DA's. Make sure you understand everything before making a move. Welcome to CA.
