    Colt 1911 Government

I have just made made delivery of a Colt 1911 Government. The breakdown for the Recoil Spring Cap on this is pain. I took it Markleys in Watsonville and they understood the design and told me just to deal with it. If anybody has this particular model and it does not have that nice button to unlock the barrel but that sharp edged type. Scottie had said some people dislike it so much that they basicaly shoot it to failure. I cur a wooden dowel when I got home as an assist tool. Is there a replacement cap that changed out for these?

I think they make a small wrench for it if it's what I'm thinking.

    Looking for a 3" Magnum 870 $200-$250ish

A strong recoil spring is a good recoil spring. Some guns with full length guide rods come with a tool to assist in removing the guide rod plug for field stripping the gun. Otherwise, everyone else just uses their thumbs. Do it a few times, you'll get the hang of it.

The tool looks something like this:

I've had mine for MANY years and never had an issue taking the barrel bushing out by hand?
Perhaps you just need to let it break in a bit????

Some of my 1911's require a bushing wrench. Some do not. My target guns have fitted bushings, so they need a wrench. Others with GI type specs can be stripped down without a wrench. My Randall with the full-length guide rod is a real pain because you have to slide the bushing in a slot on the guide rod.

Colt governments don't come with FLGR's I thought. Also, I was lead to believe Colt makes one of the better GI set ups. Never had any problems with mine.

I've got a heavier recoil spring than stock on mine and I just do it with my thumb. It might take some getting used to or wearing in, but you'll get used to it.

Btw, it's called the "barrel bushing". Like brassburnz, I use a metal or plastic wrench on my guns with fitted bushings, my fingers on the stockers.

Remove the bushing and round-over the exposed edges with a belt sander or stone.

Just keep your face out of the way when putting the recoil spring cap back in they like to fly. My competition Colt requires the use of a barrel bushing wrench.

Some Colts come with FLGR - I think the XSE (at least it did at one point). I always needed a bushing wrench, so I changed to the standard setup.

+1 to keeping face out of way of guide rod plug when turning bushing.

Thanks for your input. I am using for the time being a 1/2 dowel cut to about an inch long. And Hank, Not to confuse anybody but the Colt parts list did call it a recoil cap. If I were to call it a barrel bushing, I probably would have been corrected as to call it a Recoil Spring Cap. But we all know what we are talking about. At the range today a couple guys had 1911's. And both had the flat push button type. Makes things a hell of lot easier.

U se the extended part of the magazine floorplate to depress the recoil spring plug, then swivel the bushing to the side enough to allow the plug to be removed and the spring to be relaxed. If the bushing is tight you can also use the floorplate to push the bushing to the proper position to remove it. Or you can just buy the tool.

I lost mine from a Springfield GI last week when it went into orbit and bounced around somewhere in my garage. I searched for an hour, looking under or in everything in the garage

Later that evening when I was closing the garage door, I heard something rolling off the door toward the ground. Yep there it was

You See. Thats what I'm talkin about. I found the floorplate method. And this is awkword as apposed to just pushing a knurled button to release to release the slide. Sometimes I find that my fingers are getting compromized and nicked because there is no Finesse. Thats why I want an after market cap. Would Brownell have what I am looking for>
