Legality question - Is this legal?

Not that I am going to carry in my suv but is it true from what I understand its legal to have a handgun (unloaded of course) but with the loaded clip right next to it in a key locked container in the back seat of your car? Is this legal in CA? and in an SUV theres really no seprate (Trunk) just a back compartment so would that be legal if pulled over if in the back seat area? Thanks ahead of time for answering!

Yes, it's legal as long as the pistol is unloaded and lock your fine. What gun is that on your avatar? Please post pic.

So does the handgun need a wire key lock around it and be in a locked box or can it be loose, no wire, but locked into the box? Oh, and thats my goverment model series 80 Colt

Or on your lap. It can also be a combo lock. Staples has a neat $29 combo locked briefcase that I carry my weapon in. Throw in a newspaper and other items to keep it from rattling around. (my Glock 29 sits next to a full magazine in the case)

For added measure; I also keep the paperwork on the weapon in the flap of the briefcase lid. It proves I OWN the weapon and may cut down some wait time.

What makes you think you need a wire-key around the weapon..?...

          Let's keep it simple:

You can carry the weapon (unloaded, nothing in the chamber, no magazine inserted in the weapon) in a Locked container, ANYWHERE IN THE CAR.

You can also carry as many FULL MAGAZINES as you desire..IN THE SAME CONTAINER as long as none of them are inserted into the WEAPON..

          Got that?

The wire key lock and locked container are 2 separate items with different "purposes." The wire key safety lock does not satisfy the locked container requirement for transport, and the locked container does not satisfy the safety lock requirement for purchase.

That seems to clear things up.

Also, the container can't be your glove box or utility compartment.

and you have to stop the car and pull the key out of the ignition to grab your pistol from a locked glove compartment, but you can easily unlock a container and do a drive by then lock it back up.

So you can have a lockable box and put a gun and a loaded magazine (not inserted into the gun) in the same lockable box, and place that box anywhere in your car?

Not that I'm doubting you, but what is the specific legal citation for this? I may have to explore the possibility of doing this as my neighborhood has been going to **** recently.

Thank you! I'd like to follow it up, if I may: if I have such an arrangement and I feel my life being threatened (guy with crowbar comes at you when you're in the car, let's say), could you defend yourself with your gun, provided you can unlock, load, and shoot in time? Or is this for transportation only?

Those words are the key to any application of lethal force however, in order for this to be deemed a good shoot there MUST be an immediate and viable threat to your or someones elses life.
