If you stay on the strip, I dont see the need to carry. It becomes more hassle than its really worth. Though if you venture to the more questionable parts of the city then maybe its really up to you.

Just remember...whatever you take to Vegas, (usually) stays in Vegas.

You can legally have a loaded handgun stored in your vehicle, as long as it is not conceal upon your person. Valid CCW permit is not required.

Loaded handgun in glove/utility compartment of vehicle = legal.
Loaded handgun in backpack/range bag/portable container = not legal. unless you have a valid CCW permit.

Open Carry is legal in NV.
You can be asked to leave a building/area, if you do open carry. Failure to do so, will result in a meeting with LVMPD and can net you a tresspassing charge.

It is highly recommended that you do not open carry where all the tourists are at (the strip, casinos, malls, etc.).
Keep in mind some tourists in Vegas are from places where people are not allowed to carry/own firearms, so they will call the cops on you and LVMPD will not respond kindly to "man with gun" calls near where the tourists are at.
You won't have a problem open carrying away from the touristy places.

        Summary...
        While in CA...
... unloaded handgun in a locked container (not the glove/utility compartment of vehicle, illegal if you do so).
        While in NV...
... loaded handgun in the glove/utility compartment of vehicle.
... loaded handgun in exposed belt holster.
... unloaded in a locked container.

        My $0.02...
Get a non-resident NV CCW permit, if you want to carry a handgun for protection while in NV.
