Detecting rust on my 700?

In the safe in between the 10/22 and the 870 sits the Remington 700 bdl.

I take each out and wipe it down regularly with Hoppes 9 or CLP. About once or twice a month. Sometimes more.
The 700 has a slight orange-ish tint to it near the muzzle. Also a little bit around the sights. Is this rust? Neither the 10/22 or the 870 are showing this color.

I suck with pics so just to describe it, it's not that spotty rust look. It looks like a slight lightening in the blueing, but slightly orange...?

The stock has a shiny finish over the wood stock, so could this just be the finish coming off on the rag and transferring to the firearm? Again I wipe down the guns with Hoppes 9 and/ or CLP.

The rifle only has 20 rounds through it. Its my baby, so anyone have any advice?

I dont have a 700 but I do have a 870 that sits next to my stainless heavy barrel 10/22 I have noticed a bit of flash rust on my 870 around the receiver. A light scotch brite work and its gone. I now use a silicone cloth regularly or Rem Oil wipes. I prefer them to be a bit more "wet" now that winter is coming and safe is in the garage. Yes I have a golden rod.

for preventative measures... get a goldenrod for the safe.

I forgot that my 700 was in my rifle bag that was in my hall closet... under the swamp cooler... I took the rifle out one day and had a perfect imprint of my hand on the end of the barrel, where I hold it to place it in the bag.

Is the barrel blued or stainless? If stainless, you have a lot more options attacking whatever's there. If blued, you can't polish it (you might go through the bluing). I'd try KG-1 or KG-12 first. That stuff is gentle, and removes all kinds of stuff.

I recently picked up a 700 also and have noticed that it rusts much faster than the rest of my guns.

Sounds like it is rust but it depends. How are you seeing this, with a flashlight or just any light in the room? A strong light like a flashlight tends to make rust glow and become more obvious. Also note that blueing and parkarizing is a form of controlled rusting, and any guns normal finish can look brown or orange under strong light like a flashlight.

Use a bronze brush such as an old bores brush with Hoppes to scrub off. If the color comes off then it was rust. If not, and its still orange, then it is the color of the blue under the light - so no worry.

If you live near the ocean or in an area with high humidity, keeping guns in the safe for a month can lead to rust. Air out safe frequently - weekly per some safe instructions, lube and grease em up with CLP, not Hoppies. Get a goldenrod or other form of means to eat up moisture in the safe.
