"Remington Under Fire" on CNBC

anyone remember the Audi 5000 ?
A 10-month investigation by CNBC has found that at least two dozen deaths and more than 100 injuries have been linked to the signature product of an iconic American company.
The Remington Model 700-series rifle - with more than 5 million sold - is one of the world’s most popular firearms. Famous for its accuracy, the rifle is now the target of a series of lawsuits claiming that it is unsafe and susceptible to firing without pulling the trigger.
Remington insists its rifle is safe and free of any defect, though internal documents obtained by CNBC indicate the company has wrestled with concerns over the gun’s safety for some 60 years. The documents reveal that on at least two occasions, the company considered – and then decided against – a modification of the original trigger design intended to eliminate inadvertent discharges. One of those proposed fixes would have cost Remington 5.5 cents per gun, according to the company’s own calculations.
To date, more than 75 lawsuits have been filed against Remington alleging safety problems with its 700-series rifle. The company has consistently stated that the deaths and injuries involving the gun have been the result of improper modifications, poor maintenance or unsafe handling, and it has prevailed in some court cases by arguing that inexperienced users are in denial that they pulled the trigger.Comment

I've actually been witness to a Remington 700 inadvertently fire while cycling the action. Fortunately the girl had it pointed downrange. This was someone who knew firearm safety well and did have finger off trigger.
Only seen it once, but I *have* seen it.Looking for photos for your wall?

I really don't see what the problem is here.
People are a guns ultimate safety. If people are cycling live rounds while another person is downrange, its their fault if someone gets injured and NOT Remingtons nor the firearm itself. Please read the Calguns Wiki
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

Exactly, just what we need to do, as gun owners sue one of the oldest gun makers because of our negligence. Maybe we can put them out of business too! Isn't that what Americans are supposed to do? Talk about biting the hand that feeds you

The problem is an unreliable safety, and if people are relying on a safety, they feel less inclination to follow the rules. I'd be willing to say that if these guns had no safety at all, people would be more cautious.Comment

We'll just say that I have greater than 1 Model 700 and at least two of them are pre 82. Although I've never experienced a failure as described, I do see a few newer triggers if my near future.
My questions are: 1. Can the X Mark Pro trigger deliver the crisp break at a reasonable pull? 2. What are other safe alternatives to the X Mark Pro that deliver the clan, crisp break at 3 lbs?Comment
