How Safe is your Safe?

I have a Browning gun safe with a S&G II digital key pad & 60 minute fire rating. The more valuables I put in it, the more nervous I get about how safe they really are. Is the typical gun safe easy to break into & if so, what's the next step up? My thought is that it's only a barrier that buys time. I would really like to install additional preventative measures. Thoughts?

Nice home alarm should help as well. Keep in mind that you'll want the cellular upgrade because without it all they have to do is cut your phone line to kill the alarm. If someone comes into my house they'll get an ear piercing sound that will nauseate them (does me), followed by a phone call that they don't dare answer. Next up will be me there within 10 minutes with a G23 and an S&W 642

This is all assuming that they don't get interrogated by my neightor first.

if you are a dog lover and your home can accommodate them... one "step up" for you could be the addition of a few wonderful watchdogs that could also be great additions to your family.

dogs not only guard the home, but their family as well. and there is no greater alarm system imo than a dog that suspects an intruder is within the boundries of the home.

Adding layers to your security, as suggested so far, usually makes sense.

Definately. Even a small "watch" dog will benifit you by giving a heads up, so that you can get your weapon ready and/or the phone ready to dial 911

The safe is built-in and it weighs at least 1000 lb so I've got that going for me. I don't have an alarm but I think that's the easy next step. Ebay has a lot of DIY alarms systems that have cell connection & every other option you can imagine - I think I'll pick a system up. I also saw a motion activated cs gas module you can mount in your ceiling. The cans are large and it can fill up to 2000 sq. ft. per activation. It can also integrate with your alarm system. It's not a mini gun but it would help.

+1 on that. the best watchdog i ever had was a small poodle/terrier mix. Sadie would go berserk when she suspected intrusion was close at hand! she passed away 1/1/2003 (RIP). she was with us for 17 years.

in all fairness... i love my pit "Fester" and his rottie gal "Poki." they are dearly loved by my family and are wonderful companions; they guard their home with passion. i never worry too much about intruders.

Find out about what you have in the face of your safe. Mine has extra security measures such as glass and dial locks. If you drill in and break the glass or remove the combination dial face it springs extra locks to secure the bolts. Plus it is bolted down in a closet to all 3 sides and floor and only the face is accessible.
