Pistol Registration Question???

I was looking in Gun Brokers and found a set of Hi Point autos which were the right price but I would have had to buy them from a dealer out of state. I went to my local gun dealer to find out what has to happen. He said that the seller would have to supply his FFL number to my local dealer and then my local dealer would send them theirs. Is this the way it ususally works?? I asked how much for the transfer and was shocked at his answer. He said because I am buying them out of state he would charge $100.00 and then $35.00 for the ffl paperwork. This is for each gun. I know that I can only buy one a month. Isn't $135.00 a little outragous?? Can he legally charge this raping amount? This is robbery!! In my eyes. What do you think?
Both these guns are legal to buy in California, checked the listing. I am going to check with another dealer in town to see what he would charge. 74man

Is that place a certain pawn shop in S.S.F? If so, they want the sellers FFL info before they will send them theirs. Other places I've dealt with don't have a issue sending copies of their FFL.

The transfer price seems kinda high. Check around (Irvington Arms in Fremont) have reasonable transfer prices.

Yes, your dealer is raping you but it is completely legal. A dealer is limited in what they can charge for a local private transfer but for an interstate transfer he is allowed to charge whatever he pleases and he's not even required to do it. Many dealers charge an outrageous amount to discourage the practice as they don't want to deal with it. It is also legal for the seller to send directly to your FFL without utilizing another FFL on their end but again your dealer isn't required to do this.

Gunbroker has an FFL finder on the site where you put in your zip code and it will show you all the dealers in your area that have agreed to do this service and usually what they charge to do it. You should be able to find someone for $50.00 total for the transfer.

I'm not trying to beat on you, but are you sure a Hi Point is worth the effort, they are really not much of a gun. I think I'd combine my funds and buy one gun that would be more than twice as good as a single Hi Point.

Post what area you live in and a lot of nice people will tell you of a dealer where you will get a better deal.

What many people don't realize about situations like this is that when you want to transfer a firearm to the FFL he then becomes responsible for that firearm. For special or unique firearms it shouldn't be that big of a deal. If you want to order a Glock 17 online because you save a couple dollars, a lot of FFLs will simply refuse to do the transfer. Why should they take responsability for a firearm that they may even already have on the shelf.

Find another FFL dealer. Don't worry, there ARE affordable FFL dealers... they're out there.

If you're anywhere around Fremont, I saw someone picking up a Hipoint at Targetmasters that they had bought there.

I've never seen them in their case (embarassed to put them out?), but apparently they sell them. You could give them a call and ask, anyway.

There are often a few dealers with them at the Cow Palace gun show, too.

I live in the Vacaville area and one dealer wants $110,00 and the other wants $100.00 plus the 35.00 reg fee, which are both a rip off. Anyone know a dealer within 35 miles who will do it for less. I don't mind paying an extra 25.00. Thank god that I haven't bought them yet. But I did buy a 22 marlin rifle and my local dealers are still set on that same price and the gun is coming from a dealer in So. Cal. Man am I discouraged about this registration crap, I am willing to do it but the prices sure knaw at me, especially since I have bought many guns through both these dealers.

Ask the dealer what he can special order you a hi-point for. Maybe he will only mark it up $50 or so and he will be happy and so will you.
