    question about a PPT

hey fellow calgunners, I'm a long time reader, first time poster. I have a question I know you guys would be able to answer.

So I have been looking for a hunting rifle and recently found one locally for a very good price and in very good condition. It is a 30-6 and about 15 years old.
The seller is in desperate need for money, at least that's why he says he wants to get rid of the gun. He is convinced that we don't have to do the PPT at a dealer, saying that he wants to avoid the fees and the hassle and it isn't legally necessary. After doing some research, I found he is wrong.
Since he wants to avoid the dealer and his asking price was so low, I'm beginning to think the gun might be stolen.
My question is this, if I do get him in a store, will the PPT process immediately flag the transfer if his rifle is stolen or will I find out after the 10 day wait when I come in to pick up my new rifle?
    Am I just being paranoid?

Caution is good! Less than 50 years old, so not a C&R. Must be PPT'd to be legal.....
There are some people that it's just not worth engaging.

It's a muzzle BRAKE, not a muzzle break. Or is your muzzle tired?

It has to go through FFL. The most they are suppose to charge is $35. In the majority of the for sale listings, the buyer pays the fee.
Sure sounds like he want to avoid something. When it's more of a "hassle" for you as a buyer because you'd have to go to the gun shop twice. Once to do the paperwork, then pickup after the ten 24hr periods.
You will not find out immediately if the gun is stolen. During the 10 days, if the gun is stolen, the FFL should receive a DOJ hold notification.

For the above mentioned reasons this sounds way too shady, best to walk away.

ok so I managed to get the guy into a shop to do it legally. I can go pick up my new rifle next Monday. I'm so excited. Say something were to happen, will the shop contact me and inform me of the hold? Or will I go in to the shop next Monday and find out I'm just getting my money back?

I'm not sure when the shop would call you if there was a hold on the gun, they might just wait til you come in. And if it does get held, you get to see if the seller will give you your money back, but if he needed it enough to sell a gun cheap, he might not have it. In that case, you are out the gun and the money.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

You may not get your money back, but you will at least get to watch the guy get arrested for the stolen gun.

Since long guns aren't registered, even if it WAS stolen, how could they prove it?

Loss report to PD by last legal owner - usually includes serial number.

Maybe, maybe not, but all denials are referred to the local DA for follow-up.
