    Dumb question

Legal in CA to have loaded magazines in your car?

    Sure is.
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

I do believe it is ok if the loaded magazine is locked in a seperate area of the Gun and neither are in reach of the driver. If you have a CCW then it can be loaded in the gun in your lap.

          Incorrect.

The gun, loaded magazine, and a box of ammo can both be in the same "secure, locked container", within or out of reach of the driver.
That is exactly how I carry my handguns to the range (box(es) of ammo are in the range bag with my eyes and ears, but the magazines, or revolver speedloaders are loaded and in the gun case.)

Outside of gun free school zones (1000ft from any public or private K-12), the gun, loaded magazine, and a box of ammo may be displayed openly on the seat next to the driver.
This is not recommended, but it is legal.

Nothing in CA PC about 'in reach'. So long as the magazine is not in the gun and no round is in the chamber, all is legal.
