Sure is.Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.
- from THE SECOND BOOK OF KYFHO
(Revised Eastern Sect Edition) -
Incorrect.
The gun, loaded magazine, and a box of ammo can both be in the same "secure, locked container", within or out of reach of the driver.
That is exactly how I carry my handguns to the range (box(es) of ammo are in the range bag with my eyes and ears, but the magazines, or revolver speedloaders are loaded and in the gun case.)
Outside of gun free school zones (1000ft from any public or private K-12), the gun, loaded magazine, and a box of ammo may be displayed openly on the seat next to the driver.
This is not recommended, but it is legal.- Rich

Nothing in CA PC about 'in reach'. So long as the magazine is not in the gun and no round is in the chamber, all is legal.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!Comment
