"Enjoy the Shooting Sports"

I'm on vacation in Italy right now, and yesterday I saw something on TV that you guys will appreciate.

Just like in CA, there's a bunch of green freaks here trying to outlaw hunting, and on one of the talk shows on RAI (The Italian NBC/CBS/ABC) their spokeswoman showed up with the usual anti-hunting blather. Representing the other side (our side, if you will) was a rather distinguished gentleman who is president of Italy's hunting association. Even with my limited Italian, it was obvious that he was more than holding his own because everything he said was greeted with audience applause while the anti-hunting woman was getting more and more flustered as the debate went on.

Now, here's the kicker: during the commercial breaks, they kept running an ad showing people skeet shooting and bird hunting (with dogs) with the tag line: "Enjoy the Shooting Sports."

Can you imagine a TV network in America running an ad like that? And yet, here in Europe, where they don't have RKBA, there it is.

"Enjoy the Shooting Sports." Even my wife was laughing.

Sounds like a traditional debate between a anti and shooter. Like the one i got into with my friends sister who thinks guns are evil. Mind you she is getting her masters and is pretty educated but she was getting all fustrated as i kept shooting down her thoughts.

The shooting sports in Europe, I'm told, are a pastime of the wealthy and elite. That's what a Czech guy on a gun board I frequent told us.

He was asking why we hunted with ARs and pistols and all sorts of weaponry in the US.

He told us about the European view and tradition of hunting. Europeans have expensive weapons and said weapons usually consist of O/U shotguns, double rifles, bolt actions, etc.--nothing military style at all. We're talking things like Holland & Holland, Purdey, Blaser, Cesare Guerini, Perazzi, Kreighoff, Fabbri, etc.

Also, hunting in Europe is considered more of a social activity rather than a survival/getting food thing. Keep in mind that only the well-connected could hunt on kings' land back in the day. People dress up to go hunting over there. Now it makes sense why all these big European names in hunting sell clothes.

In all, the [expensive] shooting sports are usually for the elite of Europe.

Maybe in Italy it might be different? I sure as hell don't know.
