Mosin M44

So I just DROSed my fist WWII Era gun... A Mosin Nagant M44 for $79.00 and $110.00 out the door

Anyway the guy at Big 5 said that I could actually run the Serial Number of the rifle and find out who used it in WWII... I have never heard of that, but I would assume that you do it on a website. Anyone know if this is even true? Normally I disregard what a Big 5 employee tells me because yhey know nothing about firearms, but this interested me.

No not true. Some K31's will have a name tag underneath the butt plate with identification of the previous owner.

In regards to checking the serial number, never heard about that one. But I'm guessing it would be impossible to track down who used it in WWII.

My first MilSurp was an M44 from big5....now that I have a C&R it's downhill from there....K98.....K31....91/30......

Soviets didn't keep those kinds of records, so sorry, you'll just have to figure the previous owners' names were all IVAN

Now before you hear a bunch of hooey about how hard M44s kick, the recoil is LESS with the carbines than with the longer M91/30. It's a physics thing. The muzzle flash and shockwave is more intense however and probably what people interpret as a "big kick."

They're fun rifles. Generally they group better with the bayonet extended. Sometimes this also changes the POI of the groups, compared to shooting it with the bayo closed.

bdgfate is 100% right on the recoil, too. 7.62x54r.com's ammo section lists recoil forces for each of the ammo types they test.

My M44 was my first milsurp gun, and it's a blast to shoot. Literally! Go get some good surplus ammo for that baby and blast away. Also, mine shoots about 4 inches to the left with the bayonet folded, but right on target with it extended. Just something to think about. Now go have fun with your new rifle!

Yeah, my m44 is awesome, it's like a little cannon. the other day I was out in the desert and was able to split a brake rotor in half at a 100 yards.
