    used guns in San Diego

Just moved back to SD after 15 yrs. in Phx. Got my CA DL last Thursday night and I'm looking to buy. Anyone know of a good place in SD that has a lot of used guns hand and long? Primarily interested in bolt action rifles and revolvers. Who has the best selection around? I've been to Discount Gun Mart 5 or 6 times and American Shooters once when open. DGM was somewhat lacking in the revolver area...it seems most of the customers want semi autos and I really just went to try the range at American Shooters and they close earlier so I didn't want to keep the sales staff around if I wasn't buying. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Royal Loan doesn't have a big selection, but they are absolutely top notch people. It's the kind of business that makes you want to come back again!

Turners and Duncans in San Marcos are worth a stop when you find yourself in N. Co. I just got an older Ruger redhawk at Turners on Consignment..they have a nice M&P model 10 if you're into those right now. Duncans has a fair lot of assorted pieces for sale at full price-There is a Performance Center S&W I might try to buy if I can scrape up the money for it.

Otherwise look for SD 4-sales on this board...I got a nice 586 last month from the mid-80's.

OK, I've got to ask this.

Since you just moved back from Phoenix why didn't you buy all the guns there where you wouldn't have had to worry about DROS fees, FFL fees, Roster lists etc.?

Ahhh...excellent question. I did by a few off list revolvers before I came and the Mrs. is still finishing school (6th grade teacher) so she has been buying what she can. My move came very quickly however and I didn't have a ton of time before I came over. Now I'm her though and I just got my DL so I want to buy more guns...yeah!!

Just go to Discount Gun Mart, just because it is not on the shelf does not mean they don't have it. They have over 3K guns in that tiny shop. If they do not have it, they will get it for you. Best gun shop in SoCal from my experiences. do not be afriad to ask at this shop, they will surprise you by running in the back and getting out what you want. This is great, unlike Turner's who says if it is not in the warehouse, then, etc... etc... The guys at DGM wil work to get you what you want, and they guaranty the best price in San Diego County. If you find it less elsewhere, stop by there and you will get a better deal.

                      +1 for DGM

While their shooting range isn't as nice as American Shooting Center's, if you buy a membership ($250, same at AS), DGM gives you a purchase discount. So far, I've saved $80 on two purchases that STARTED as less than AS' regular prices. And I've shot there at least 6 times (saved another $60-90 with guest discounts added), I can use my own ammo, and all within the last two months!

ASC's personnel are very professional, explain things well, have a good selection, etc. They just need a better grip on pricing better and paying attention to the local competition. Had they offered product discounts with their membership like DGM, they could have kept more of my business.

About the range: look at the bright side. The lighting prepares you for what you'd typically find in a parking garage. ;-) When we qualified at the outdoor Sheriff's range in daylight, actually seeing the sights in their full glory made aiming a piece of cake! BTW, DGM's range is about 20 yards, ASC is a full 25 yards.

Turner's on Clairemont Mesa, w of 163, has good prices and selection but is hampered by Turner's personnel. Asked about doing an FFL transfer and they quoted a seriously "outside DOJ-specified limit" price of $100. Once I got the attitude, I walked. Too bad for them because I bought the same new gun for the same price from DGM. Then DGM applied the member discount for more savings. Both my purchases at DGM were ordered, not in stock. Item arrived in a day or two. No prob since 10-day waiting period.

                          Thanks for the advice

I've had a few soso experiences with the staff at DGM nothing to terrible though just not what I would call A+ service. As for the range...it isn't that bad...I kind of like it better than American Shooters. Thanks for the advice.

Funny how someone mentioned how bad Turners people are.. I recognize like 3 guys who used to work at Turners Kearny Mesa now work at DGM. I never bought anything there because they're prices are higher than Turners. I know they price match, but I'd rather just get it from Turners and skip the hassle. Their range is a great place to shoot though. I find it's a lot more relaxing and less crowded than ASC's. A lot cheaper too.

                              royal loan and precision

I don't know about DGM, but when we were buying our off-list lowers in early 2006, only a few FFLs would do the transfer. Royal Loan and Precision arms were the only two I knew in San Diego who would do the transfers. This is my first reason why I think we should do more business with them.

The second reason is that the people who work at these shops are really knowledgeable and they're great to talk with.

For really nice target rifles, I think you'd be hard-pressed to beat precision arms. Royal Loan seems to have a larger selection of used firearms.
