DON"T USE BRONZE WOOL OR ANY ABRASIVE. The WD40 should be fine with a soft cloth or patch. If you are still seeing corrosion try a wipe with Hoppes #9 or similar. After all the cleaning is done wipe down with a good oil.
Also was it on the outside of the barrel or the bore? If it was outside and the surface was rust blued you may be seeing some thin areas in the bluing, especially if, as another poster said you live in a coastal area.

Your mileage may vary, but I used steel wool plus CLP to cut through decades of rust on one rifle I own. Years later, the rust has stayed away as long as I keep it wiped down with CLP. Yes, maybe the steel wool cuts through the blue, but after all those years, I don't think there was much bluing left anyway. Bottom line, it worked for me.

Will the Hoppes actually remove this insignificant rust?

However, when I shine my flashlight, I still see the brown. What gives?

In normal lighting, the gun looks fine, however. The surface is still smooth without any pits and crap---but the brown will still show up after the light.

Should I try the kroil, or am I being too OCD? (because you can't even tell the rust is there).
I would just use more WD-40 and scrub it with a plastic bristle cleaning brush, or an old soft bristle toothbrush if you have one laying around. You don't want to use anything that will scratch your metal and remove finish from your firearm.

I did try that, but shining the LED on order to be able to "see" the rust messes up the picture.

              Otherwise, it looks fine.

Maybe I can try when I get back.

                  Kroil oil works wonders....

Just be sure to have plenty of ventilation. I had a sore throat for a week and a half using that stuff....

For the kind of rust you're talking about I'd suggest you try some Remington Bore Cleaner. Its a very, very mild abrasive similiar to JB Bore Paste but is a liquid.
You'll be amazed at what comes off.
You can get it at wally world.
