    Gun Registration

I purchased my first guns here in California and picked them up last evening. One pistol and two rifles, all 22 cal. I forgot to ask the clerk, who was not helpful in the first place, about the registration process.

I understand they send the state all the info on me and the serial numbers of the guns (rifles also?) but does California send me something like a certificate or a letter stating what has been registered?

I know, you get tired of the all the newbie questions, but .....

No, not the rifles, rifles are not registered in the state of CA. You will not receive anything regarding your registered pistol.

Technically, there is no "Registration" in California. The sales by FFL Dealers are all recorded by the State, the long gun sales records are by law thrown away after a brief time; the the sales records of handguns are kept indefinitely. If you move into the state you are required to notify the state of any guns you have with you and they keep a record, if you do the familial transfer you are to send a notice to the state for that also. But if you have owned a weapon since before the laws were passed there are no records and no record is made of cash and carry C&R sales.

You do not get anything from the state when you make a purchase, no letter or certificate.

So you have no "Proof of Registration" to show if someone asks. Except maybe a bill of sale. You can send a form with a fee to the DOJ asking what firearms they have on record as belonging to you. A nosey LEO can call in your serial number to see if it's been reported stolen or if there is a record of it's sale.

          But no "Registration" in California.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but when were the laws passed? If you brought guns in prior to the 70's when you moved here did DOJ have to be notified?

Reporting of handguns brought in by new residents as they moved to California didn't start until 1998. If you moved here before then with handguns then you weren't required to report them.

Private party transfers of handguns between California residents were allowed to be paperless and unreported up until 1991.
