BLM land near SF Bay Area

I have found been going to a pretty legit place to shoot guns. Sly Park road exit in pollock pines off hwy50, and left on Mormon emmigrant trail.

The problem is that I live in SF and that's a 2.5 hour drive.

Is there anywhere within an hour and a half of SF where I can shoot without paying range fees?

knowing the bay area as i do.

    the answer is NO!

    north you have marin county.
south all developed or private land.
    west the pacific.
east the east bay developed or private land.
you would have to go north to the north east side of clear lake. open shoot might get closed.
east bay there is redwood park and a place north of livermore (580). both pay to play.
south unknown all the way south to la. some hunting areas but not known by me of a open target shooting place.

got a boat? but still have to drive it a long ways west anyhow.

aren't you glad you live in the bay area.
that place is a couple hrs from me,
i have a nice place to go to. only 45 min from here, it is up in the sierra. great view of a canyon. nobody to get a problem with/from. only 1 mile off the hwy. (dirt rd).

    .

This is true, but I usually go with three to five friends, which makes ammo and gas worthwhile. Last time we killed a case of wolf .223 in Utah (30rd mags of course).

i hate public ranges,,,sorry to all the people that go there but there are just too many idiots that i don't feel like dealing with. do i have a private place to shoot ? No, but just the thought of public makes me cringe,
when i set up i have about 10 targets on one place card. i don't need to go downrange every 10 min. to check i can look thought the scope or spotter. the whole concept irritates me

That's why I'm a range officer at Richmond. Range officer = your own keys to the range.

To the OP, I don't know where any BLM land is, close to the Bay Area. Most of the spots I have heard about didn't sound too desirable. We used to go to the Knoxville area, located between Berryessa & Clear Lake, but that is closed to target shooting now. Not that it was close anyway...

I think now, the closest area would be National Forest. There's a few posts here talking about specific spots, might try doing a search here.

I'm trying to locate a spot too, close by.
