Loaning a handgun to a relative...

I just did a few searches and couldn't find anything so I'll ask directly!
What could happen if a handgun I loaned my dad was used by him for self defense? My dad seems to think that it would come back to me as the legal owner of the gun and I would get into some sort of trouble. Just curious if anyone has any info on that or a link to some info??? Thanks

As long as the self-defense use was legal there is no reason it would come back to you. Assuming the firearm was held during the investigation you would have to fill out a LEGR and retrieve it yourself from the PD.

Also, the person to whom you are loaning the gun must have a valid HSC (handgun safety certificate) at the time of the loan and the loan cannot exceed 30 days.

You can legally loan a handgun to someone you know that has a HSC for any lawful purpose for up to 30 days.

          Penal Code 12078
(d)(1) Subdivision (d) of Section 12072 shall not apply to the infrequent loan of firearms between persons who are personally known to each other for any lawful purpose, if the loan does not exceed 30 days in duration and, when the firearm is a handgun, commencing January 1, 2003, the individual being loaned the handgun has a valid handgun safety certificate.
