    Firearms Transfer to California

    Recently, a gentleman from California approached me online about a firearm related trade. The deal is he gets two Mini-14s and I get a CA-legal FAL. Here's my problem, I'm having trouble deciphering CA's gun laws.

    How do I transfer firearms to a California resident? The original plan was that we (the persons involved in the trade) would ship our firearms (via UPS) to the others' FFL and then have our respective FFLs transfer the guns to us. Is there a problem with this? I keep hearing about an "authorization" number that I have to get before I can ship the two Mini-14s. I thought that was only for transfers between dealers, but my FFL tells me otherwise. I've been looking at the CA AG's website and I don't understand the legal mumbo-jumbo involved. I want this deal to go forward and so does the other guy, but I don't want any screw ups along the way. I don't need any unfriendly visits. Can a dealer chime in and give me the straight scoop on transferring two Mini-14s from Montana to Southern California? Also, what will the other guy need to do to transfer his FAL to my dealer. Thanks.

      As long as you are not a FFL holder, you can ship the rifle directly to the buyers FFL here in CA and the FFL in CA does the transfer. Just like shipping them to Texas. You just need the receiving FFL to send you a copy of his license for your records.

      Likewise, your FFL should send him a copy of his license for his records.

          That's what I thought but my dealer said otherwise. I don't know jack about CA's laws and I want to be dang sure I don't run afoul of the law.

          You just need the receiving FFL to send you a copy of his license for your records.
          Do I need actually need a physical copy of the FFL license? I have the dealer's license number and have confirmed the license through FFL EZcheck.

              You are not an FFL, therefore, it is fine to send your rifle to the FFL here in CA. That is the 100% correct way to do it.

              No, that should be fine. Most people like a "copy" because it is a CYA, although not required. Just remember, only ship to the address listed on the FFL.

                  Since you are not a dealer you can ship directly to the Ca. FFL. Your local FFL cannot do that. He has a few other hoops to jump through that don't apply to you.

                  Couple other bits of info for you.

                  You should ship any magazines and accessories directly to the buyer. If those mags hold more than 10 rounds you must disassemble them first and send the parts to stay legal.
