Won't ruin aluminum, but will attack SS to a degree. Stainless steel does in fact rust, it just takes longer.

Stainless Steel is still steel. It will still rust.

Aluminum shows a bit more resiliance to that type of oxidation, but it's possible for aluminum to "rust" and turn a dull black

Just use a water-wet patch as your first patch when cleaning. Then proceed as normal. The corrosive salts will be taken care of.

I asked this question because I am considering getting a 5.45x39 upper for my AR at some point in the future. The AR has many nooks & crannies in the upper receiver that are difficult to clean. A piston system would (mostly) cure that problem but it does add $250 - $350 to the cost.

          Thanks for the replies!

what about a 5.45x39 ak74? cost will probably be around the same as a new upper if not less.

I have a Bulgarian AK-74. My AR is a RAW so I can use my legally acquired 30-round mags to feed it (with new followers so they will feed the 5.45).

I had a friend who used to shoot Black Powder with a stainless Ruger Old Army, thinking that he wouldn't have to clean it...wrong

stainless just means you don't have to clean it right away
