    Need a good Holster option

Im taking a defensive handgun class pretty soon. I have a very cheap generic holster from a local surplus store but was wondering what my best options are. What have you guys run before and what did you like or dislike? I really like the thigh rigs but im not set on that either. I have a little experience with blackhawk Serpa holster and liked it. Oh also this is for my new 1911 im picking up a week from today!!!!!

I took two courses with my cheapo Fobus, several times the paddle pulled off my belt and it was not all that comfortable....

And a lot of folks are not wild about the Serpa CQB and the 'button' release...

I got a ITAC for my 1911. functions similar to the Blackhawk serpa.
We build the toughest, most precise rifles, pistols, suppressors, optics, ammunition, and airguns, while offering the finest firearms training.

and cheaper to. I never had a problem with it. i dont shot very often and am not a seasoned defensive handgun dhooter. but itd all about proper technique. When you draw the pistol properly your finger will end up on the slide lock part.(ont he right side of the frame the little ball that the slide lock pivots around)

I tryed the fobus one as well and had similar problems. just could not get it to release reliably.

Is the defensive handgun class supposed to approximate threats you'd encounter while carrying concealed? Or is it more of a tactical CQB class? If it's the former, you won't be wearing a thigh rig while carrying concealed. So I'd recommend an inexpensive yaqui style holster until you figure out what you want after the class. If it's a tactical class, go for something like a Safariland ALS or Raptor thigh rig. People seem to like the ALS retention system better than Serpa's (jams when dirty).

I always use a retension holster that doesn't have a 'button' like the Serpa holsters have. I have a Fobus Evolution holster for both my G19 and 1911, and they work perfectly for me in the defensive handgun courses I've taken. It has a slight click when you put them in, and you just pull it out and you're good to go (pull out at a certain angle or the gun won't come out, like if somebody else grabs it).

In the same defensive handgun courses I've taken, I've seen my fair share of people who had the Serpa holsters with a release button. And at least once or a few times, they would forget to press the button when doing timed drills against somebody else. I'm not saying this will happen to you, but it's like any muscle memory... like flipping the safety on a 1911 when you're used to pulling out a Glock and just pulling the trigger.

i had that problem for the first half hour or so. than it just became a habit that when you go to position one, you press the release button. best thing you can do is dry practice in a mirror. I didnt have that luxury because i had bought the holster literaly the day before(only had a cheap thigh holster, didn't want to feel total mall ninja. but that damn thigh holster is just to comfy when walking around in the desert) just go step by step. 1, 2, 3, 4.

I have a Serpa CQB holster for my Sigs, and it sucks booty. The button is a pain to operate, but it does hold the weapon securely. I wised up and got a Comptac for my M&P, it still has quite good retention without a button, and works very well in IDPA.
