    Ruger Cleaning Recommendation

I recently contacted Ruger support asking this question:

I would like to know what solvents are save to use on a Ruger polymer frame pistol purchased in 2009. Are there specific chemicals to avoid to prevent damage or fading of the finish?

    Their reply:

We recommend that you do not use any type of solvent on the frame.

    Donny1,

Despite what Ruger recommends I use Prolix on all of my guns/pistol frames and slides. The solvent is organic and is said to preserve wood stocks. Besides that polymer frames and such is usually resistant to solvents. My alternate is to use Birchwood Casey's "Gun Scrubber" in a spray can along with a brush.

I use good old Hoppes #9, a tooth brush, and a rag. Followed up with a light coat of Rem oil when I'm done. Works great and doesn't hurt anything.

The Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber can be harsh on synthetics, but it does clean good.
