    Gun Shop Experience

Thought long and hard about posting this, but I ultimately felt that this would be constructive info for my fellow Calgunners and maybe even for the folks at the shop...

Over the past few months, I've been into several shops throughout the East Bay, Sacramento, the San Joaquin Valley, etc. This one really sticks out.

    J&R in Livermore.
    I've been in, 3 times.

First Visit: Just wandering around, mainly window shopping for general accessory items. No big deal. Was greeted cordially, staff was friendly, got my questions answered, they let me handle a pistol or two. Went on my way, as the items I was looking for, weren't in stock at the time. Overall, good experience, though.

Second Visit: Met up with a fellow Calgunner, for a PPT. (I was the buyer). Prior to our meet-up, he had told me that he'd been into J&R, done PPT's there in the past and liked them well enough. My previous experience had been positive, so I agreed.

The shop person who actually helped me, turned out to be "less than friendly". It seemed like they were rushing through everything, failed to explain the safe affidavit to me (I had asked) and charged me for a lock. It's the lock part of this that has me annoyed. They didn't ask if I had one (which I did, thought I needed it upon pickup, oops)... they didn't ask my permission to add it to the transaction, they didn't tell me they were adding it to the transaction and they didn't tell me what the price of the lock was. Yes, I know the laws, but they should have been a bit more informative. Yes I understand that they do this all the time and this was my first CA PPT, but customer service shouldn't be sacrificed.

Third Visit: The PPT pickup. I had the misfortune of being "helped' by the same shop person, from my second visit. Again, with the rushing, unfriendliness and so forth. While they were back getting my gun, another shop person asked me if I needed help. I told them I was being helped and we talked for a few seconds. This other person was friendly, welcoming and even smiled. When the first person brought my gun back out, I was sort of leaning over the counter, trying to read the ammo boxes & prices. I told them I was having a tough time seeing the price tags. They just stood in front of me and started finalizing the transaction. We got all finished up and they failed to follow up with me, about the ammo. So I left with my gun and got my ammo elsewhere.

To be fair... Every other person I've talked to in that shop has been great. Informative, helpful, cordial, etc. The place is small-medium size and their selection of all products is okay.

To be fair even further... Maybe I scared this person. I'm a big, intimidating-looking guy. I've discovered throughout my adult life, that the sight of me, scares some people. With that in mind, I always try to walk and talk quietly, I try to smile and in a non-verbal way, let folks know that even though I look like one... I'm not actually a Viking, there to raid their village. I believe that I conducted myself in a cordial, non-threatening manner, during all my visits to J&R.

Maybe this person is fed up with their job. Maybe they just don't want to be there. Maybe their mommy didn't spank them. Maybe dealers just get grouchy about doing PPT's. I don't know. Suffice to say, that I might go back to J&R, in the future, I'm not completely writing them off. I will do my best to avoid this person, however.

I think Livermore has additional regulations about locks. I recall that J&R states quite openly they must sell a lock with every gun purchase/transfer.

Well damn Sasquatch you got your answer. Dont sweat it dude. People tend to look at me funny also. I mean I only drag my knuckles on the ground cause my sleeve length is longer than my inseam. besides the wooden club in one hand and the cave woman in the other tend to get heavy after a day of hunting mammoth.

Dont sweat it. if you feel that you werent treated right do what I do. Vote with your wallet and go to a different shop

Maybe the guy was just having a bad day give them another shot. if that ends up crappy walk away.

Good luck and remember there are more gun shops in the world

seems to be an increasing trend that a lot of people in these shops just aren't pleasant. i'm sure they get their share of time-wasters and idiots, but that's the retail business as a whole. you would think, however, with the common ground we all have as gun owners/buyers/sellers/potential buyers/etc, that we'd make an effort to be more pleasant to each other but alas, it doesn't seem to be the case. a local shop, since closed, happened to be near a restaurant i frequented with my family. one morning, faced with a long wait, we ventured over to this shop. with the front door standing open and a couple guys inside, my father, 2 brothers and i walked in to examine their wares. we were then informed rudely "we're closed" wtf? why's the door open then? we all kinda looked at each other and shuffled out the door, never to return. small wonder that shop closed down shortly thereafter. for whatever reason, it seems gun proprietors are becoming less patient and more snippy, not wanting to answer questions, ignoring people. it's just not good business. it'd be like the small plumbing company i work at answering the phone and then refusing to address somebody's problem. with the economical climate as bizarre as it's been, i've spent as much time this year doing customer service as i have service work. kinda depressing but generally, one leads to another.

              Clarifications...

              1. Just the one person was a problem. Everyone else I've ever seen behind the counter in there, were the opposite of the problem person.

              2. Clerk's ringing up your groceries and while doing so, rings up a couple of additional items that you did not select, without explanation. How would you react?

              3. My first PRK PPT ever... so I guess I didn't know the secret handshake.

              4. My CDL & add'l POR, which they scrutinized, clearly shows the city I live in (not Livermore).

                osokne,
I apologize for the way you were treated. I am not sure if it was me or someone else in the shop who made you feel this way. Can I get you to please PM me the information and I will try and correct this problem and keep it from happening in the future. I don't want any of our customers to feel like they are being rushed. And at anytime should you feel that way please let Randy or I (Joe) know.

I do apologize to all Calgunners about our stupid LOCK LAW that we have in Livermore. I wish I could make it go away. I have also instructed the employees to educate our customers to this rediculous law. So hopefully they are doing it. I will go over these problems with the employees to make sure they are aware of what is being done wrong so we can fix it.

If anyone has a problem do not hesitate to PM or call me at the shop. I need to know about these problems so we can make sure they don't happen in the future.

                    jrhglock99 (aka: Joe),
Thanks, seriously. It means a lot that you'd come up on here, offering an apology and trying to set things right. I wasn't trying to be a jackass by posting about this, it was just the one person and I tried very hard to make that very clear.

Don't worry, it wasn't you. In fact, you were the first person there that I talked to, on my very first visit to your shop. We chatted about this and that, Q&A'd a bit, had a few laughs, etc. As I said before... "Overall, good experience". Outside of the one person, the rest of your staff is great. (Sorry, I don't know their names).

Now you struck me as a smart fellow and likely you've probably already figured out which customer I was, or are close to it, at least. By that reference, you'll figure out the person I had the trouble with. I'll kick it around when I have more time (have to run) and maybe we'll discuss it further.

Like I said before... "Suffice to say, that I might go back to J&R, in the future, I'm not completely writing them off."

Interesting thread. Good advice (tho probably not needed) and followup by the shop.

I sympathise on the original poster's comments on retail reactions to physical size and appearance. I'm no bigfoot, but do have the knuckledragger syndrome (these apehanger arms do come in handy at times, tho). My brother and I just did a gunshop tour of Idaho and Eastern Washington "just for the halibut."

I noticed that when the shop employee was alone and youngish, they tended to look like they were ready to slap leather when we walked in (Attack of the Geezer Ape-Clones!) We finally decided to come in separately and then stay close together in the store--gunshop guys tend to get really hinky when you look like you're outflanking them! The older guys just took one look at us and smiled, tho. It takes one to know one, I guess.....

Expected to get blown off when I asked if the shops shipped to CA (I lived in ID for ten years and am VERY familiar with the CA steriotype in ID). But I didn't expect all the interesting and complex FUD that I would get when I asked WHY they wouldn't ship! Story time! I should have recorded it and published it under "FUD's greatest hits"! Only about half of the shops would ship to CA; tends to be the bigger ones with more volume, and more internet time who know what a "paper tiger" it is for the dealer.

In the end, we got some guns (I got a Rem 760 .300 Savage, a truly cherry Winchester Model 37 20 guage single shot, and an S&W .38-44 Heavy Duty; my brother, who is a WA resident got a "used but unused" SIG 220 Compact) and my brother got a LOT of ammo that he couldn't find in the Seattle area. I also got a pretty rare holster (for $4.95!). Prices were to drool for, if you're used to CA; even with the shipping and DROS added.

We also visited Cabellas in Post Falls, ID and I was really surprised at the "Gun Library." If you can get to one of these places, the used gun prices in the shop are lower than they post on the internet (and they deal).

We need more REAL WORLD consumer info on shops like the original thread here!

I've been in there three or four times and have great experiences. The response below from J&R to me shows they care about the customers. I knew that from my personal experiences but it's nice to see more publically.
