Which movies display proper gunplay?
sigpic United States Air Force Security ForcesTags: None -
"Quigley Down Under"
"Appaloosa"
Count how many rounds are fired and when they reload. You'll be amazed that they got it right in a movie.
But, if you don't care about reloading, then check out...
"Way of the Gun"
"Tears of the Sun"
"Blackhawk Down"
"Street Kings"
"The Unit" <-- TV seriesLast edited by Quiet; 08-31-2010, 4:20 AM.sigpic

But, I didn't include it because at the end of the movie, Sergeant Haytham was rocking a M4A1 carbine without a rear sight. Just bugged me.
WTF?!?

Sweet lack of weapons safety with the finger on the trigger.sigpic United States Air Force Security ForcesComment

These examples are just off the top of my head. Most of these had other scenes where the gun play was shotty, but also had a scene or two where it was 100% dialed in.
I am fine with gun screw-ups, provided they are "in-charcter". I expect the skill level to match what the character is expected to have if it were real life. I do not expect a house wife who has never held a gun before to have good muzzel discipline or even know the safety rules. If she puts her finger on the trigger, well that is normal. I also expect a gang-banger or terrorist to get it wrong to some degree. I do expect a Delta Force Operator to have perfect gun handling skills in every area and a police officer to be competitent on gun safety at the very least. It is when that gets mixed up that I get pissed off. If the actor does his job and does the necessary research then the film works. If he doesn't, then anyone with any firearms training calls BS instantly and no amount of suspension of disbelief (a film industry term to describe why people will tolerate obvious impossibilities in films and still enjoy them) will help save the film.
1) Way of the Gun 2000 was a relatively low budget film with actors working for scale, if that. Yet it was the first movie I can remember that was damn near spot on with regards to keeping gun handling skills and tactics within character. There are a few minor mistakes, but even those are believable since gun handling skills are perishable and people's bad habbits creap in over time. Notice the modified weaver stance, the hand at one point coming to the stomach to avoid muzzeling it, the almost perfect grip for that technique, the use of cover when available, and the move/moving team tactics. I was really impressed how a low budget film could come so close to getting it perfect when so many big budget films of the day got it so appaulingly wrong.

NOTE: If the clips do not load click on them and they will open in a new window on YouTube.
FIRST CLIP: Shows the techniques mentioned above.
SECOND CLIP: Shows an actual tactical reload. When was the last time you saw one of those in a film?
THIRD CLIP: Shows pretty darn realistic room clearing. They move too fast, and end up wasting a ton of ammo when attacked. However, it is a much better attempt than any of the big budget films of the day.
2) Collateral 2004 had Tom Cruise as Vincent using some seriously impressive gun handling skills. When he comes into the alley and spots the two punks steeling his brief case, he kills them by the numbers. His draw, grip, stance and tactics were textbook. However, Mark Ruffalo as Detective Fanning does a John Woo-ish one handed gang-banger type move when it was totally uncalled for that was not only pitiful, but completely out of character. Still, it is worth watching just to see Tom get it right. He does it so well, it is almost worth calling it the best attempt Hollywood has ever made. Sadly the other actors lack of attention to detail screwed that up for him.

3) Blood Diamond 2006 had Leo Dicaprio using spot on handgun techniques. Everything from the way he held it, down to his tactics were perfect. Not sure if this held true for the entire film, but Leo did his homework. Look for point 3:29 to see him use a picture perfect modified weaver technique.

4) Body of Lies 2008 was another film in which Leo showed off his gun handling skills. There may have been some mistakes by other characters in the film, however most of the other characters with guns were Jordanian security forces or terrorists and such mistakes would be consistant with the various levels of training those charaters would have been expected to have. Best I could do was the trailer. There are one or two tid bits showing him getting right that are impressive in it.
IMDB PAGE: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0758774/
5) Man on Fire had moments where they had it spot on, and moments where they perpetuated age old Hollywood myths about guns. Best I could do was the trailer. Most the clips online are of the various torture scenes that were indeed impressive. There is a brief example of the Isolese technigue being used in the clip, and it is spot on. However there is some one handed nonesense and finger on the trigger when it is not supposed to be nonesense as well. It would be fine if it were in character, but it isn't as his character is a well trained professional. So as far as gun handling goes, this film is a mixed bag. Still, it does get it right more often than not. Few films can even say that.

6) The Bourne Identity 2002, The Bourne Supremacy 2004 and The Bourne Ultimatum 2007 all had moments where they had it spot on with a few obserdaties mixed in for good measure. There is not much gunplay in the clip I found, but what I saw was spot on.

I'm sure if I spent more time thinking about it I could come up with more.
Hope that helps.Last edited by tacticalcity; 08-31-2010, 2:37 PM.Comment
