converting beretta 9mm to 40 sw

It is certainly possible to purchase a 92FS 9mm slide and use that in conjunction with a 96 .40SW frame. I have never tried the reverse, but it may well be possible? Different magazines would be necessary, and it's an entire new slide, not just a new barrel like with some guns. The caliber getting larger as opposed to smaller could pose an issue though.
You'd want to speak with a Beretta rep or possibly try a Beretta forum. I'm sure someone around here knows, but chances are a Beretta forum could answer that much quicker. -

Leads me to believe you couldn't convert your 96 to 92. The reverse is possible because you can shoot 9mm from .40 mags. Good luck reliably feeding .40 from a 9mm mag.
Talk to Beretta if you're set on it.
To add in my own personal agenda: But why do you need a .40 anyway? You have a 9mm, thats a cheap target round, and if you're looking for more power don't step to .40, step to .45.Comment

Converting a 92 to a 96 with just a complete barrel/slide assembly and a .40 cal magazine is possible. Both frames are the same. I believe CDNN was selling .40 cal 96G complete top ends for $220 a while ago. Yes, .40 cal. magazines will feed 9mm.
