+1 for IDPA. Most matches are filled with super friendly shooters. Probably the least intimidating of the popular action shooting sports.

Good idea... but it should not be thought of as simply as that. If you just rush to get that first shot off as quickly as is humanly possible I'd be concerned about instilling bad habits.
Bad idea... IMO. This is going to instill a "spray and pray" response and a complete lack of fire discipline and trigger control.4. If range allows rapid fire, empty the gun into center as fast as you can
Fixed that last part for you...YoucanMUST also practice weak hand, strong hand, and flashlight.
Firing on paper in a controlled range situation can be very beneficial to a shooter's overall training and skill set. Dry firing is also a good thing to do periodically to help retain muscle memory and to reinforce fundamentals.
Here is one set of exercises involving pistol, rifle and shotgun that are a good routine and also provide a solid basis for defensive shooting.
