Hello Calguns members. I'm honored to be a part of this group. I'm looking for information about developing a "private shooting club and range". I'm hoping that someone from the Calguns membership has some experience in this area, or at least a few tips they can pass along to me.

How to make a private shooting club/range

In another thread this NRA publication was brought up. It seems that It would be the best place to start.
I am supposed to welcome you to Calguns since I am your first reply.
Welcome to Calguns. We hope you enjoyed the free time you had before you came here. (wait a year and you see what I mean)

Best place to start is find a location where you want to open the site.
Then go the planning commission for that site and find out what the permitted use's are, as in Zoning.
Are guns allowed at that site?
Does the Zoning Plan break out the difference between rifles and handguns? If not, more cost to separate if you want only one flavor.
Find an Architect willing to work with you on the site development (about 8% fee?) of building(s) and permits.
Get a legal pad and scratch out a business plan to include all government fees (both one time and ongoing), insurance, banking/accounting, equipment, utilities, advertising, cleaning etc.
Then the cost of employees is another whole game. I suspect for every 3 employees on payroll you will have the cost of another employee added for cost of government regulations, a ghost employee you pay for through work comp, medical ins, paid leave etc.
You should also get an FFL, a COE and a bottle of Excedrin.
There's more.

Can'thavenuthingood...Thank you for the reply...I actually have the property now with a small personal range set up; have been shooting on it for years. Even had loca PD use it at one time. It is currently zoned AG40 in the south tip of Sacramento County. I also have an architect working with me on the project. I already have existing buildings/shops on site. My intent is to convert a 600 square foot area into class room. But I digress. I've seen some other people near me have similar "private clubs". Part of me asking for advice now is so that I don't run off half cocked to the county and hit a snag. It helps if you know the game in advance. And from what I can tell hunting clubs and shooting clubs are permitted use in our zone. Again, thanks for the reply, I've already taken up the Excedrin part!!!Comment
