Shooting on public land near Tracy

About 10 years ago I went shooting with some friends on land that was behind a power station just off of a road way out in the Tracy area if I remember correctly. It's been quite a while, but I want to say it was off like Grant Line road or something like that.

Basically the road is way out in the middle of nowhere and there's this power station. You drive around back of that and there's a field with some rolling hills, no fences to keep you out.

Has this changed? Was that legal in the first place?

My friend said it was cool, he had only been stopped one time before and they just said don't shoot at the power station.

I would think that unless the area turns up on a BLM or NF webpage as being managed under that agency, chances are the land is private, or owned by the County or State - therefore making not legal without their express permission. If I recall correctly, the largest land owner in CA... is the State. This becomes obvious if you ever fly over CA as there are miles of vacant areas.
The only thing that is worse than an idiot, is someone who argues with one.

Are you thinking of the pump station on Kasson Road? Grant Line Road becomes Kasson if you follow it outside of Tracy. We used to hunt and shoot between Tracy and Manteca around:

      37.71320N x 121.28825W

Been a good 10 years since I lived there and went to the place. At the time it was legal to hunt there. The land is/was managed by the Water Reclamation Bureau.

Never had a problem shooting there, other than a game warden checking for hunting licenses and repeating shotguns having a 3 round max capacity.

Good dove hunting there and limits of cottontails (5) when the cycle is peaking.
