Gonna have to look for a beat up old piece of luggage.
What are you talking about? If you've already DROSed the pistol you can legally ship it to yourself. Just make sure you use UPS or FedEx. The USPS either will not ship, or will only allow FFLs to ship; I'm not sure which.

The 5 Kilogram limit is an international limit, I was looking over one airline's web site and in their domestic flights they allowed 50 pounds. Probably had some experience with 3-gunners... Most airlines stick to the 5 Kilo limit, but a few others have higher limits.. Gotta check your airline individually.

Department of Transportation regulations allow 25 kilograms (55 pounds) for domestic passenger aircraft. But, as you said, most airlines follow the IATA/ICAO regulations and the 5 kilo limit.

          What are you talking about?
I was referring to an FFL transfer; yes I suppose I could just FedEx it to myself.

I've always just notified the clerk that my locked box had a gun and never had any problems.

Well I work for TSA, in the Checked Baggage Area, At SAN. What are the chances of that? Usually, there is not enough metal on just a handgun to alarm. I would recommend putting your hardsided case in a duffel bag filled with clothes at the very least. If the screener need the keys to open it up, they will just call the ticket agent to request the key from you. We are not actually looking at your firearm, we are looking at the area around it. The massive hunk of metal makes it hard for our XRay to look around. Truth be told, I would not go with a TSA lock. For a number of reasons, I (and anyone else who has enough time to learn) can open a TSA lock within a minute without using the masterkey. It is just a matter of looking between the disc that the number dials are on and matching up the grooves. Trusty ol Master Lock(that uses a key to open) would be best. Even though I work for them, doesn't mean I would like them to have easy access to my firearm. Hope I answered your question.

                  duffel bag?

Call the airlines, they will tell you the outside piece of lugggage must be hard sided to check a firearm. A soft side duffel will not work (my experience, as of Jan-2007).

Furthermore, from now on I am mailing everything to myself.

I know Southwest Airlines does not have that policy.

American Airlines website does not specifically say either way.

What airline told you about that rule?
