Long range shooting matches ?

What is the best way to get into this sport.Is there a cd I can buy that explains all the ins and out 's of it or do gun range's has classes on this.
I would like to get into the sport some day.
Is the 308 the basic cartridge for the shoot's?
I know a good mil dot scope is needed.
