Rifle and Shotgun barrel length question.

Correct me if I am wrong, isn't 16" is the legal length for a rifle barrel and 18" is for shotgun? If this is correct, why is it different?

    TIA,

Maybe because shotguns can be had in pistol grip only.
'Cuz big holes are easier to see.

You can correct my spelling and grammar error anytime.
I welcome it. How else would I learn.

I believe the 1934 National Firearms Act originally set the minimum exempted barrel length for both rifles and shotguns at 18 inches. Then in 1960 Congress amended the law to change the minimum barrel length for rifles to 16 inches. This is also when they came up with the 26 inch overall length rule.

People have said that this came about because the Army wanted to sell off M1 Carbines to the public and many carbines had barrels slightly shorter than 18 inches, but I don't know for sure.
