    Why Democrats dumped gun control

Monday's shooting at Virginia Tech is a reminder that the party that once championed gun control has been running away from it since the 2000 election.

I thought this was an interesting read. Sorry if it is a repost

I believe that like most things in life, there are continuums, even in politics. The article is saying that some of the Dems have gun control as their 5th or 6th priority, while most gun owners see the prevention of it as top priority. Although this article is from a Democratic perspective, I think they are attempting to be reasonable. McCarthy is an exception, she is a fanatic.

Edit: Huh, what happened to the post I was replying to?

It's just smoke screen. I don't trust any Democrat that says "we don't want to push gun control, we just want to reason with you."

They "dumped" gun control because it's getting close to election year.

They're witholding public support of the more venemous whackjobs like Feinstein and McCarthy, but I'm sure the privately jeer them on. Once elections are over, expect it to come back to the front again.

Democrats, like all politicians, can conveniently "forget" about an issue until they're secured in a position to do something. They have always and will always have a campgain of disarmament of the law-abiding citizens. Don't forget history.

          Good replies.

Btw, I posted this article in the hopes of fostering a deep, mutually beneficial discussion. I am trying to remain as aporetic as possible in order to better understand our current situation. (in other words, no flames please)

I think there are many Democrats that are progun, not the majority but growing group..Blue Dog Democrats..Many of the freshmen class of last election are from this class. Two protect our gun rights, we must have support from the GOP and the Dems as once was the case long ago,,

Yawn, blue dog, progun Dems, blah blah blah.

Those few phrases have been repeated on Calguns so much, I am almost starting to see the benefits of having majority of Democrats in the state Assembly.

              Oh wait.

              Remember 94 and SB23!!!

the SB50 was rail-roaded through by the Dems to shove in from of Arny's face and say "you sign this or we will paint you as a cop-killer supporter." See Jerry Brown's AG ad for what could have been done to Arny. The lone Republican in the sea of Democrats, poor little fella(seriously, Arny is shorter than you Lee)

'89, sigh, banning importation of AKs is not my idea of a good legislation, but I know I'm not the only gun owner that pukes at the idea of paying for Russian or Norinco made guns. Something about the principle of things....

Well you caught me by the nuts, where do I go for the re-education program so I'll give GOPs and Dems equal air time for denouncement? You'll never catch me voting for Rudy or Mitt if that makes any difference.

That is the problem in Cali, many of centralist Democrats have left the party over the last 20 years..Now is the time for gun supports to drive the Dems back into the center..I know many union members, gays, minorities, working class folks that are very progun but would never vote for a GOP candidate..I say register as a Dem, work at the local level to drive progun planks at the lower party level..

Example Alberto Torrico, D-Newark got a lecture at local party event last year over AB 2714 Firearms Ammunition (Would prohibit purchases of ammunition via the Internet) in front of a host of Dems by a progun Dem. He was asked how many crimes were commited with ammo purchased via the internet? Could he site any crimes conducted by minors purchasing ammo over the net? Did he not know most internet vendors already require an adult sig before UPS delivers ammo? Did he know that ammo is cash and carry at gunshows\gunstores??

We need to move the Dems to the center if we ever expect to return to the Cali gun rights level of before Roberti-Roos. I would further declare blindly following the GOP will not serve us..Of course if you have a rabid anti Dem and a Pro GOPer, vote the 2nd..

                    My $.02

ETA: I was referring to the '89 CA AWB... I'm not arguing your point

I know one guy that worked there and he is about a few inches taller than me and he was seeing eye-to-eye with Conan the Barvarian, so I'm content being 2 inches shorter than the Terminator.

yeah the two '89 bans still confuse me. isn't politics uplifting to all of our spirits?

According to IMDB.com... height, 6'2". Although my mom informed me a number of years back that People quoted him at 6'1"

A bit on the tall side, but not too far there.

I wonder how many years of pro-gun democrats will it take before the die harders here see the light?

Keep in mind, they may be right. we will just have to wait and see what they do after '08, because it is a safe bet that they will not act on gun control before then.

the guy I know is 5 10". The IMDB info is well, IMDB info.

Any how, only time will tell on the issue on hand. Bill Richardson, the lone pro-2nd ranger on the Dem side scored a mere 2% in the latest polls, and Juliani was leading the GOP polls. Man we need some help.
