Sorry this might be a dumb question, but what is the benefit of building an 80% lower?

You can make a pistol lower which is cool because pistol lowers cost a lot. Making a rifle lower doesn't make sense financially but it's still fun to do. Another reason is to keep the resulting gun "off the books" so to speak.
