    Sunnyvale Gun club

Any members who want to chime in on the benefits of being a member? I was thinking of joining the club.

Non-members are welcome to provide their feedback on the range facilty and etc.

    Thanks!

I like it more. The RO's at Los Altos are too much for me. They yell at people a lot.

I'm boycotting that club because I think that the "Be a citizen of the United States of America" membership pre-req is pretty silly. Of course the club is free to set their own requirements for membership, but I'm also free to choose where to go shooting and if I'm not good enough for that club, then I won't bother giving them any of my money either.

            Good point...

Since I am a US citizen, it should not be an issue.

I haven't been a member for too long, but I've enjoyed it so far. The cost is minimal (I think $65 a year), but it's a working club. You have to put in your hours. There's three membership levels, basically you can advance every six months if you put in 20 hours of work and attend the monthly meetings.

There's various things you can do to get your hours, like work the gun shows, clean up the range, do dishes (don't get suckered in to this one, it sucks), repair target frames etc. Once you become an associate member (6 months as probate member + 20 hours of work), you get the gate combination and can shoot during non public hours (any day 9AM-9PM, there are a couple exceptions).

It's tons of fun, there's all kinds of events (ATA, Action Shooting etc.) pretty much every week. The monthly meetings are sometimes boring but they serve up some great free food. And free beer. Overall I've been happy with the experience, I've met quite a few good people and plan on sticking with it for a while.

Also, as a member, you don't have to pay to shoot rifle/pistol, and trap is $2.50 a round.

If you're looking for a club with a good rifle/pistol range, Sunnyvale isn't the place to go. Join Scotts Valley Sportsmans Club.

If you are looking for a club primarily for Trap, Sunnyvale is the CHEAPEST place to shoot @ 2.50 a round. They also have a nifty trap system where you yell pull into a mic which will throw your bird. Now you don't have to yell at the puller.

I was a member @ Sunnyvale a few years back but just didn't have time to do the RO duties, work parties, etc just to save money on trap shooting. Also, IIRC, you can't shoot pistols at <25 yards due to richochets off the ground that ended up hundreds of yards away by a high voltage tower.

I am not a member, but have been to their facility several times and am considering joining. A know a few members, and they are nice guys. I would recommend joining if you want to shoot a lot. If you are a more casual shooter, like me, then I am not sure if it is worth it.

If you shoot a lot, you absolutely cannot beat the price...$50.00 per year. Once you get past your probationary periods, duties are a minimum.

Trap is $2.50 per round. Rifle and pisol are free. Targets are free, too. If you go to the meetings, they provide you with a free dinner.

What is really nice is when you can shoot during "members only" hours. Sometimes you're the only one there.

I have been a member for almost a year now, and I can tell you, it's the best deal out there and I live about 2 miles from The Los Altos Rod and Gun Club.

You will not regret joining, The menbers are a great bunch of guys!

The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is a U.S. government-chartered program that promotes firearms safety training and rifle practice for all qualified U.S. citizens with special emphasis on youth. Any U.S. citizen who is not legally prohibited from owning a firearm may purchase a military surplus rifle from the CMP, provided they are a member of a CMP affiliated club. The CMP operates through a network of affiliated shooting clubs and state associations that covers every state in the U.S. The clubs and associations offer firearms safety training and marksmanship courses as well as the opportunity for continued practice and competition.

I'm a member (probate) and I think it's a great club. Its cheap, it's very close, the work duties are not that bad, and overall it is pretty fun. I shot my first couple rounds of trap there a few weeks ago and loved it. Can't wait to "graduate" to an associate member so I can shoot during member hours.

They guys there are a bunch of characters, young and old, you won't be disappointed.

As for the "must be a citizen" comment, I think they might have been referring to the fact you have to join the NRA to be a member. What sort of crazy person wouldn't want to do that?

                          It's pretty clear...

To join the club you must:
                          * Be at least 18 years old
                          * Be a citizen of the United States of America
                          * Be a member of the National Rifle Association. (Bring proof of membership, such as NRA card or recent magazine with mailing label. If you are not an NRA member you can apply to the NRA and the club at the same time.)

What's wrong with "Legal resident"? Oh well, I don't worry about it, and Im sure they dont either

Ah I didn't realize they actually had that as a requirement. Being a citizen myself, I probably glossed right over that stipulation. Still, to each his own. I like the club, and to anyone who joins the club who meets the eligibility requirements, I think they will too.

Finally shot there yesterday afternoon and I must say it was a pleasent exp. No issues with the RO/RM. Atmosphere: Friendly, safety minded, and clean.
Will be there at their first time member meeting on Thursday.
