Best Ammo for Home Defense Thread.

Ok guys, here's a thread to post your suggestions for home defense rounds. This should include any ammo you want including Handgun, Shotgun and Rifle rounds. I would also like to hear from the guys who reload thier own ammo what they would use for HD wether it be a purpose built handload or a factory load. For handloads please try to include all specs including, powder, charge weight, OAL, bullet brand + type, and if you have a preffered brass and primer combo.

This is not really supposed to be a SHTF type of thread but I know it's hard to resist so feel free to throw those suggestions in here too but just be clear on if it's for HD or SHTF.

I guess I'll start it off,

HD or SHTF Pistol: .45 ACP Winchester Ranger Talon 230gr. +P HP .
HD Rifle (if I used a rifle for HD): Hornady TAP NTX .223
SHTF Rifle: handloads and milsurp. depending on situation.
HD Shotgun: #4 buckshot with high brass.
SHTF Shotgun: good ole 00 buck and a few slugs on the saddle.

    Personally, I don't feel much of a threat from this thread...think a .22 should suffice :-)

Seriously, one concern in HD is over penetration. What happens if you miss the "perp" and a round goes into the wall, how close are your neighbors, etc. My personal preference for a tract type house is a shotgun loaded with first two rounds "birdshot." Next rounds are "00 buck." If you are talking about defending a "ranch" then I would consider something like a .308, or again a shotgun with buck shot!

I read on the interweb that #8 birdshot was the way to go at close range...but NOT ANY MORE...

      Check out this...

Here's why it's my new shtf standard...

      12 GA. Terminator-X
Upon impact, this slug mushrooms and expands to nearly 2 inches, stopping the slug from totally penetrating your objective. This rapid expansion forces the dozen of tiny pellets to spread through your objective like a cancerous disease, opening an area at the impact point equal to a softball! The cavity created has the shock effect of 95%! That means only 5% of any living being could survive this kind of hit. 2.75 round

Answer seems obvious..................................THE PRICE. $14.95 for 3 rounds?! So it would only cost me $40 to load my shotgun once!

The other problem I see with it is that your are now effectively using your shotgun as a rifle since you aren't shooting multiple projectiles creating a pattern which I think is the main reason shotguns are better for HD then rifles???

Price should be no object when you're defending yourself and your family.

Usually, .45 hollow points or 00 buck. Maybe an Eskimo broadhead if he really pisses me off. I'm a simple sort of guy.

I've heard this argued here before and not everyone thinks there's a problem using reloads. I do understand where you're coming from and all, but to benifit those who feel it is not a problem I wanted to include that option here.

Yeah you're right about feeding being key too.

                  Feeding and shot placement

But by far been able to use your gun under stress is key.
Most stand in from of paper and try and shoot a little nice group.
Everyone talks crap about it because they don't do it but airsofting can really sharpen up your skills especially in your house, you will learn where you have the advantage and where you are more likely to get shot. You can't recreate a human moving target shooting back at you any other way.

Airsoft would be fun, I like paintball better in some ways though. I do know one guy that plays airsoft alot, maybe I'll see if I can go try it out with him since he has a bunch of the guns.
