Gun smith course

My nephew has decided that he wants to go to gun smith school. Any suggestions, recommendations or warnings about the schools out there? Anything we should be looking for as we help him evaluate the schools? Any assistance you can provide is appreciated.

Lassen College in Susanville has a decent course, and it is not very expensive.

Lassen CC is widely recommended. I understand the program is organized into many short classes.

I've learned a lot about my guns and found a great joy in tearing them apart and putting them back together with these videos. Bob Dunlap is the instructor, retired after many years teaching at Lassen.

AGI also offers a mail order gunsmithing course, looks like a good one, but how much can you learn at home from a video as opposed to working with an experienced smith hands on in a classroom.


The best advice I've heard for a young man with gunsmithing ambitions is to learn how to use machine tools, welding and how to run a small business. Hang out with a working gunsmith and learn some hands on, then go to one of the community college programs. Then get $50,000 or $100,000 together and set up your own shop.

All the competent smiths I've ever heard of have waiting lists and more work than they could handle in 5 lifetimes.

The world certainly needs more good gunsmiths, but it's not an easy or well traveled road.
