    SHTF stockpile ammo?

I am planning to stockpile some ammo for potential SHTF situation in a dry and dark place, and only plan to use it if the situation arises.

So is there any preference on what kind of ammo that is reliable and lasts the long time such as .45ACP, .22 .223 12gauge etc...

And which company produces ammo that lasts the longest in storage?

If you have an AK or SKS, I highly recommend Norinco Ammo, second would be the Yugoslavian , than WOLF. 7.62x39mm Norinco ammo found in Arizona and Nevada, check small towns such as Pahrump or Mojave county. Expensive but reliable.

250 round packs from Walmart or wolf tins. Handgun Buy 5 extra magazines and buy JHP+P
Remington Buckshot and deer slugs from Walmart. SHotgun
Military surplus 223, 1000 rounds around 500. Remington or those 200 round packs from Turners, than Wolf. 223 rifle
    308 200 round battle pack
    7.62x54R or 8mm cans
22lr blazer, REMINGTON 250 round pack coroded after 12 years

Don't go crazy but just pick 1 primary firearm and buy a 50 cal ammo can full of ammo for it. Think WEIGHT, TRANSPORT and time. You have to be able to move fast.

REmember to pack those little packs you find in shoe boxes in your cans.

Ammo that fits your SHTF guns is a good start

When selecting SHTF guns, think common calibers for which there's lot's of ammo out there (I am sure 6.8 SPC is a great round but I wouldn't want to go looking for that in EOTWAWKI scenario).

Think about what you will do with the guns - one or more handguns, one or more hunting rifle or shotgun, and a semi-auto for self defense?

be proficient with your guns. If you know how to use them well, you will not need that much ammo. if you can't use them, any amount of ammo will not help.

My suggestions - for handgun go for 9mm, .45 ACP .40 S&W, or .357 mag since they are all common and effective as a self-defense cartridges.

Shotgun - store boxes of 00 for defense and hunting, as well as #4 and #6 for hunting

If you plan to add a carbine to your safe, store 1000 rounds of .223 which are cheap and should be easy to find if SHTF

Finally you can add a high-power hunting/sniping rifle, again think common cartridges like .308, 30-06.

a .22LR rifle is another upgrade to your "readiness" - ammo is cheap, small (you can buy and store 1000's of rounds for cheap in a small space) and it can be used to hunt small animals and easy to shoot for a spouse or a child.

buy "fresh" ammo, test 5-10% of what you buy to make sure it's good, then seal in airtight ammo cans with fresh silica gel desiccant. Once a year, open the cans, check the ammo (visually or by shooting some of it) and put new gel packs in. once every 5-10 years, try to rotate the whole thing and get fresh stuff.

And don't neglect other SHTF preparations. You can't eat or drink bullets.

          Please do.

I would buy ammo that is sealed in cans like Tulammo or Brown bear.

you can say paranoid all you want but in an event like stated those green little pieces of paper in your wallet will be useful for nothing more than kindling. Ammo will be a new currency if there is enough organization to have a marketplace, if not it will be either that you were prepared or you killed the guy who was prepared... or you got killed for not being prepared enough.

If this situation never happens at least you will have enough ammo stockpiled for your childrens children to use, or in 2 years when ammo is 5x as much money you wont have to worry

I purposely try to limit the amount of different rounds I need, and have guns that use the same ammo when possible. I have .38/.357 guns, .40 caliber guns and .22/.22Mag guns.

Working on having at least 2000 rounds in each denomination stashed

Bingo. Give the man a can of SPAM.

I urge all concerned to look at the Survivalblog site, Rawles runs probably the best survival site overall, he's criticized by some as a "yuppie survivalist" and there are other sites that cater to the low-budget survivalist, but if I had to recommend ONE site it's Rawles' site.

I dont understand when people say get calibers that will be "easy to find"..
what would be hard is finding someone that has enough ammo that the are willing to part with. I know I would never sell a single round in an event where lots of ammo would be handy.

Not paranoid, just prepared. And it is not like it hasn't happened in the recent past, and we do have that huge earthquake I believe is over 200 years over due or something.

Btw, great suggestion guys, all taken

Having eleventy billion rounds of ammo isn't going to do you any good in a real SHTF scenario, have enough so that you can difuse a situation, otherwise stockpile money, food, toilet paper, stuff like that...It's going to come in more handy in a real emergency anyway.

I have about 250 rounds of .223 and some pistol ammo for an emergency...The rest of my 'stockpile' gets used. Let's get real here, if there is a 'real' SHTF scenario going down, you are probably going to die anyway.

dude, the entire movie "the Road" saw the good guys having only 2 rounds. Are you tougher than Vigo Morgtensen?
