I listened to an interview with an officer with 30 years of experience and who has been in 13 gun fights, not counting times where he was forced to draw and shoot first. which adds even more to his list.

That question was asked to him and he stated the biggest you can fire, 147gr is what he would carry for a 9mm. He spoke of several multiple gun shots using 230gr .45 and the guy didnt go down unless a vital was hit (hip, knee head), so with a 9mm, the same is true. After his first no-1shot stop, he and his partner ALWAYS aimed for the head. Some of the stories he was telling were eye openers.

I will carry 147 JHP until I get some better real life data on 9mm.

this is like 45 minutes long but a great interview.

I like lighter and faster bullets. The more velocity the more of a chance you have of the hollow point bullet doing what it was designed to do.

Now, after having said that...I have seen just as many people killed with a FMJ as with hollow points. Regardless of caliber, good (or lucky) shot placement is mandatory.

The thinking has always been about the 147gr that they tend to overpenetrate and go through the target. I'll stick with the old Evan Marshall advice that the 115gr is more effective. A lot of law enforcement carry the speer gold dot though.

There has been a LOT of talk about which weight is better, hollow point vs flat point, etc...

If this is for home defense, the standard 125g hollow point 9mm +P round will do the job very effectively.

If you need to shoot through windows, car doors, etc... you will want the heavier 147g bullet according to FBI testing using the MP5 sub machine gun.

If you're looking for speed and fragmentation, the lighter weight 95g hollow point will do a LOT of damage with the +P+ cartridge. However, these rounds are not effective through solid walls (not drywall) such as plywood, 2x4's, brick, tile, etc...

Bonded +p HP seems to have the best terminal ballistics.

Shot placement is more critical in terms "stopping power". What's gonna stop you faster....a 9mm round between the eyes or a .45cal to the gut?

What will stop you faster....a 9mm right in the heart or a .45 in the same place? I'm guessin' with a round in the heart both will stop you just the same.....but neither will drop you in your tracks. You will have a few seconds to a minute before the lights go out.

The only spot on the body that is pretty much instant lights out is right between the eyes, or at the base of the skull. Instant stopping power for center of mass body hits is bit of a myth. A bigger hole MIGHT make you bleed out a little faster depending on where you're hit but the difference is prolly not significant.

So if CoM hits won't instantly stop them in their tracks physcially......what really is the stopping power were talking about? We are talking about initially inflicting enough pain to cause the attacker to it hurts more to continue the attack then it does cease and disist immediately. Short of being jacked up on PCP or something I think their are very few badguys who gonna take a 9mm round or 2 to the body and shrug it off. I can't speak from experince but I'm gonna guess the a 9mm round to the vital organ area of the body is gonna F-in' hurt!

I'm stocked up on Speer GD 124gr and Federal HST 147gr. Both feed reliably and thats what matter the most to me.

You will get mnany opinions on this topic but I go with Massad Ayoob and others who prefer the mid-range (124 gr +P). Take a look at Gold Dot, Federal HST, or Winchester Ranger 127 +P+...I would really research it for yourself and see if you need 147 gr like so many internet ninjas say. Heavier and slower is not always better.

I like the 124 Gr. +P. It's pretty similar to the 125 Gr. .357 Magnum in size and velocity (although not identical). The other stuff works fine too. Just remember your point of aim will change somewhat if you switch.
