    Why I "love" Oakland

At the moment, there are about 12 OPD cruisers in front of my house. They just arrested two guys for B&E my neighbors house, and are hunting for the third. All were armed and look to be about 16 years old. Good thing we're laying off all those officers. I can't imagine what we would do with them.

Thank you OPD, you guys did a great job today!

Wow. I guess better your neighbor than your house. Stay vigilant.

Here here... OPD gets a bad rap much of the time, but to my mind they are brave people doing a difficult job. I can't believe the city council thinks fewer people can do the job.
      Hope for the best

The Oakland city council are idiots if they think less police = less crime! Next they'll want to emulate chicago's new effort to regulate gun ownership. I think our local, state, and federal government have all lost their collective minds. Sad.

A highschool buddy lives in Oaktown (Oakland) and he is a TOTAL Anti gunner. He said if he needed a cop he is thinking he is on his own (unarmed) for at least 45 or so odd minutes. LAME on both accounts.

Maybe they just want the crime rates high so that people don't notice the other problems there...

I love Oakland because -- those little pricks live (and are without doubt scott-free by now...) in Oakland, not where I live.
I spent nearly fifteen years there, made great strides in my own neighborhood (although at great personal risk) but finally just had to give it up and take my earning-power/equity/contributions elsewhere.

Fight the good fight or whatever, and don't look back if/when you ever get enough of it.

Furthermore -- if the occupants of that house had greased the intruders from the start, they wouldn't have needed so many patrol units on the scene.
              Big waste of resource.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the support.

Coda: you won't believe this reaction from the neighborhood. After the police left, my neighbor sent out an email to everyone calling the criminals "bottom feeders" and "scum bags", which seems right to me, and suggested that we all call the City Council and demand that they stop the layoffs. But, most neighbors felt that such language was "too strong" and reminded us that the police "often overreact." Just when our neighborhood comes together and wants to thank the OPD, my idiotic neighbors are worried about language. I'm speechless.

I can't wait until I can afford to move out of this godforsaken place.

Then you should go ahead and send a handwritten letter addressed to the chief of police using words that you feel comfortable with. Don't let your neighbors water down your sentiments - speak for yourself and be heard.

                    "Why I love Oakland"
Because as our illustrious Mayor Dellums suggests, I can "celebrate the diversity". Just think, within a 10 minute drive I can cruise through a neighborhood of multi-million dollar homes, with gorgeous athletic women jogging along with their pony tails swaying out the back of their baseball caps to seeing porch people with their 2 inch acrylic fingernails clutching their 40 ounce malt liquor.

The only thing(s) that keeps me here (besides the weather),,, well, it used to be the world class salmon fishing off our coast from April - November, but we can't do that anymore; my wife earns $55 per hour, but much of that disappears in taxes, with more guaranteed to go; the natural beauty of the place, I've lived here 60 years so I've experienced most of it.

                    Rant over.

good story man...good to hear the cops got there in time...but its also scary to think what if they were busy with a sideshow or another shooting, your neighbor might be dead or robbed!

Nice to hear a negative turned into a positive!
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.
