Are AK type rifle builds legal?

Hi all

Just wondering how someone can do an AK build and have it be legal. I realize that if you follow the rules and make something that looks like a mini 14 it should be legal. But I thought that the words (All AK series including, but not limited to, the models identified as follows) would make any AK type design illegal. I 'am just wondering if anyone has had the DOJ say Yes it is legal. I' am new here and you may have talked about this, but I was just wondering..

Another guestion, so an AK type reciever build with a detachable magazine would have to be built with a Mak 90 style barrel. No treaded barrel, no bayonet lug, and of course no PG correct.....

So it can be just like a M1A and have a threaded barrel but you can only put a muzzle break on it. Bayo mount doesn't matter in this case. So I can have say a Romi G kit built with a non listed receiver, detachable hi cap mag, muzzle break, bayonet lug, and no PG. Can the mounting hole in the receiver for the PG be left open as long as no parts of the PG assembly are used? Thanks again for all the info..............

Constructive possession does not apply to assault weapon catagory three evil features. You can have the pistol grip but you can not install it, not even for a second.

Otherwise you are correct. You may want to check out the Monsterman Grip for AKs which is a no pistol grip, pistol grip replacement.

You should check out the new monster man AK grip. It's a comfortable grip stubstitute that isn't legally a pg.

Thanks for all the info, I have two registered CA assault rifles so I'am aware of the old rules and I always carry my registration paperwork with me when out shooting them. So I have pre ban hi cap mags and drums. I was told by the DOJ that you could not build AK style rifles but it seems they are wrong. I will check out those grips.
So who will do some AK builds for me?
I live in the LA area.............I have cash......

Well Jemdauxx (he has a post over in the for sale area) is supposed to be one heckuva builder.

he handeles everything from A to Z and does a right purdy job of it.

there are other guys on here who do it too, but he's probably the most well known and he's local.

It's not very expensive considering you get a custom built rifle.
